I am buying Christmas gifts for a 4 year old who loves star wars. Having grown up with Gi Joes myself I would love the idea of starting him out with some action figures and a ship or something. But Id like to make sure I get the right line / version so that the collection will scale threw his childhood. Is anyone here familiar with the starwars toy lines ? Also, I saw some "rogue one" items in Toy's r Us and while visually beautiful they were hella expensive, is that the souped up limited run for collectors only or is the main starwars line just more pricey and expensive that I would have expected. Thanks so much for all your assistance!

There are several different lines. Currently, Hasbro has dropped an ongoing line in favor of movie themed lines with only 4-5 waves. For a 4 year old, I would recommend the Galactic Heroes line by Playskool to get him started. See how that goes and if his interest holds, I would only by the best versions of the characters. There are about a hundred Vader figures but he only needs one for example. Rebelscum.com is a great resource for all the different lines. Best of luck!

The 4 POA line should be good for a 4 YO, he can use them layer with the more articulated figures if he ends up into them.

In general, the 3.75" Black Series and the 3.75" Vintage Collection line are what you want.
To supplement the above suggestions, when it comes to Joe-scale Star Wars figures I peruse JediBusiness.com for version comparison and JediTempleArchives.com for detailed reviews (though they don't review every version - it's geared toward the adult collector looking for a "definitive" version of a figure so 5-PoA is absent). It bears mentioning that Hasbro has all but abandoned 1:18 scale figures except for 5 PoA, 70's-era crappy builds. The highly-articulated line has gone to $13 per figure and is now a Walmart exclusive (with spotty distribution making it impossible to find at retail in some regions). If you plan to move the little guy to Joe-scale highly-articulated figures I suggest you shop early (waiting for good deals on eBay) and expect it to be difficult. I skipped the cartoonish Galactic Heroes for my 4-year-old and it went fine. You just have to allow for some breakage until they learn the limitations of the toys. Unless he has a habit still of mouthing toys - which can kill him if he does it with these - I recommend you start him off on the right foot. Many of us had Joes at about that age and we survived AND loved them enough to still be interested in them as adults.

Yeah, if you aren't ready to plunge him into the full articulation I'd agree that the 5-PoA is better to do than the Galactic Heroes stuff.

Thanks for the replies -- I take it the 4 POA is the playschool galactic heores, the 5 poa is the new movie waves i saw at toys r us and the 3.75 black series is the main line, highly articulated and more expensive. The 5poa is a 3.75 also or is that a true 1.18? Thanks again for all the feedback everyone, very helpful

The 5-PoA and Black Series figures are still about 3.75 inch, rather than 1:18 scale. So, both product lines can play together, but both will look a bit small compared to the average Joe figure or most other modern-era figures, which are trending towards 1:18 scale (4 inches).

I thought the 4-PoA reference was a typo. I'm not sure how Galactic Heroes could be incorporated into play with the "super-articulated" line later on but the 5-PoA could be.
Like MagicWazard said, 5-PoA is 3.75" also. The vehicles only come with those 5-PoA figures and they fit both figure types (and ME Joes) just fine for the most part.

The latest or current TBS 3.72 sa stuff is engineered EXTREMELY well, they stay together as a cohesive unit when tossed in bins or played rough with. HOWEVER, the figures they decend from, the ones most collectors value ( tend to be from about the ROTS line in 05 to the end of the TVC/ 3d line around 2012) can be very hit or miss in this respect as they were made primarily as ultra detailed display pieces. As a result hands, heads, belts and other gribble will tend to fall of some of those, for some reason it seems especially armored troopers for some reason. So if it is possible, you may want to get the latest version of things or just replace any character not available in VERY modern SA with the analogous 5 poa version just to avoid tracking down missing bits in order to even use a complete figure.

...Ifr I ever end up back in the adult single parent dating pool I am listing " Master class toy wrangler" as one of my dating qualifications. I play with toys, have three boys that play with toys and have a stream of neat freakiness, so at the end of each day I usually gather up what they have strown, get it at least assembled into a core and organize everything by toy type and scale. Over the years I have found that up to about 5 or 6 YO the SA VOTC, VTSC, ROTS, TVC, Movie Heroes and Lost lines will tend to be missing a hand ( Oh god the hands, there are c a couple of Joes with this problem like the Retaliation Cobra trooper/ Para trooper)or helmet or poulldron or something by the end of the day.
