The 12 piece offering IS a full retail case. So, yeah, expect a super articulated 3.75 figure from Hasbro to average $12.99 this year. Quote:
Just thought with the promise a new 50th style line up in 2015 and more in the works for 2016, we could brace ourselves for the increase now and not cry so much when we see the stuff later this year.
That also doesn't factor in that maybe Hasbro could mitigate the per figure cost through the use of multipacks, but to say fans won't cry and bitch and moan when/if the price is higher later this year? Quote:
Which is fine by me. I've always advocated that Hasbro should focus on a quality figure and let the cost fall where they may

I think $13 four a mass retail release figure is to rich for my blood. At least when it comes to being all in. I'll pick and choose my favorites from all the 4" lines. And I might start picking up a one or two of the Revoltech Minis. But my collection is going to get a lot smaller in the next few months. I think it's time to start more of a character focused collection.

At 12.99, I will certainly only purchase figures I really want. At 10, I was enticed to get marginal figures like Data Viper that I didn't have a plan for, thinking I might want the parts later. At 13, I will only get what I want, spend a little more on used stuff, and maybe do more casting. In general, I will stop buying figures because I might want them later. Its not that I think 13 is overpriced, only that it just pushes the price up to less of an impulse purchase for me.
On that note, does anyone have any thoughts into how discount prices play into Hasbro planning? ie do they charge high volume retailers like TRU so that they sell at 10-13, knowing that at some point, they are going to be selling truckloads to stores that will sell at 5 bucks a pop? Also, Target was (or are they still?) offering the BBi figs at what $5 each? Yes, they are repaints with less repainting than the originals, and a reduced number of accessories, but still, that makes GI Joe over twice the price. They seem like a bargain, especially when compared to the TRU True Hero stuff, or even other chap mei products. |

I stopped at my local Target this week and to my horror saw Marvel, Star Wars and another line or two at $12.99 a piece! I was upset when they first went to $10 a figure and thought it would slow me down...it didn't. But, this is getting a little out of hand. I can understand they're a business and China has increased worker wages. I'm a troop builder! I use to buy 20 figures for $100 (in '08), now I'll be getting 7 for that price. ugh.

What concerns me the most is that Hasbro's competitors haven't increased their prices the same way, meaning a price increase of 30% in these figures will likely drive significant sales to competitors. |

Mattel's 6" DC Total Heroes might not cost $20, but they have less articulation and lack a BAF piece (in addition to the stylized nature of the product). Movie Masters were up to $16 the last time Mattel produced them, and I would NOT be surprised if the next batch was $20. Many retailers were pushing a price higher than $10 for DC Multiverse as well this past year. Batman Evergreen/Unlimited started as a 5" product line, but shrank this past year to 3.75...but remained pretty close to the same price. And let's not forget the basic Green Lantern line was $8.99 for 5 POA, or Man of Steel which was a buck less, but had even less character variety. IIRC, TMNT was $7.99 per basic figure when launched a couple years back, but are now 8.99 (and BBTS case breakdown is $9.19 per figure). Though that is moot when retailers are still using the brand as a traffic driver and are pricing below MSRP. Again, at least Hasbro has tried its hardest to continue making things like STar Wars Black or Avengers Infinites or ME GI Joes. Mattel would have ended or overhauled those lines years ago. As far as driving people to competitors...doubtful. Kids want what they want, and parents will usually relent. If a company has a compelling brand, people will still buy it.

I don't army build and my figure buying has almost dried up completely. But if I see a really nice figure I will spend that $10-$15 for it. As I said, I hardly buy anything now so the price while high wouldn't deter me from a nice figure with accessories. Like many others, I am thinking of downsizing so I can enjoy my collection more.
