Disney Moving Their Doll Business From Mattel To Hasbro In 2016 - Disney - Action Figures Toys News ToyNewsI.com
With Marvel & Star Wars doing so well, The Mouse decided to keep all 'their' toys under one roof.

I just hope it helps the GI Joe brand in a positive way.

I know that Disney has not been pleased with Mattel's handling of certain product lines, Frozen in particular. They severely underproduced initially, which is understandable given the movie's slow start and past experience with Tangled merch sales. The problem was, once the movie blew up in popularity, Mattel was caught with their pants down and took forever to ramp up production to meet demand. They weren't able to get adequate quantities into the stores until well after the holiday season. Needless to say, customers weren't happy about it and scalpers were having a field day.

Depending how petty you look into this, Disney COULD be punishing Mattel for dropping the ball on Frozen, or they could be rewarding Hasbro with how they've handled Marvel and Star Wars. Quote:

If anyone bothered to read some of the prior investor reports (outside the brand specific highlight posted), they would have known about this change up back around Toy Fair. :p As is, I don't see this as having any significant impact on "us". The license is an ENORMOUS boon to Hasbro's Girl division and company as a whole, but I don't see it changing sad realities in the action figure division: the segment is still in a downturn, and GI Joe is not, seemingly, a priority for Hasbro at the moment.

That seems to be a common issue with Mattel: they are great for the big initial market saturations, but are bad about sustained replenishment (even then, at least from my observations, Mattel's replenishments come in bulks, rather than the trickle from Hasbro).
Depending how petty you look into this, Disney COULD be punishing Mattel for dropping the ball on Frozen, or they could be rewarding Hasbro with how they've handled Marvel and Star Wars. Keep in mind, though, Mattel still has the lucrative CARS and PLANES license, plus Toy Story and Sofia the First, and I'm pretty sure the Fairies license is separate from Princesses. So this is by no means the grand consolidation I think some are reading into this. I'm a bit amused all this new coverage of this, though. Good for Hasbro, doesn't mean diddly for G.I. Joe. |

Now if only WB does the same and gives the DC licenses to Hasbro...

Technically it's not impossible for a company to hold both licenses. Toy Biz did so briefly back in the late 80's/early 90's (though only for a couple years). Mego did back in the day (though laws have no doubt changed somewhat since then).
Not saying it's likely, but I don't think it's technically impossible. Having like 90 percent of the superhero merchandise under one roof wouldn't be considered a "monopoly" in and of itself. It would be Disney and Time-Warner that would butt heads, because both would be concerned that their lines were going to get the short end of the stick in comparison to the other (and in Time-Warner/DC's case that's a valid fear). |

In addition, Lego currently has the license to make construction toys for both DC and Marvel. I want them to lose the DC license (maybe Mega Blocks can take it) as they seem to be neglecting Marvel in favor of making more sets with Batman.

Probably far more likely that we'd see Lego lose the Marvel license and it'd be transferred to Hasbro, thus we get Marvel Kre-O.
