And I'm not talking about the kind of charmingly innocent retarded actors got oscar nominations for portraying in the late 90s. I'm talking about the kind that causes grown men to deffacate on themselves and throw the poo around like monkeys while laughing maniacally at your anguish.
How do I come to this revalation, you ask? Well, a couple weeks ago at TRU I saw some of the anniverary edition TMNT figures. I felt tempted to get one or two, especially the April O'neil, which was my first one and very rare back in the day. Seeing the $10 price tag, I decided not to get into another expensive nostalgia-based toy line. Well, a week later I was browsing through this little independant toy store for collectors. These guys have complete (though filthy) Night Raven's waiting for collectors to give them some TLC. Well, while browsing the figures, guess what I saw. A vintage April O'Neil, MOC, for $9. And if you really want some sticker-shock, go look on ebay for what a vintage, complete Alpine w/file card is going for compared to the 25th. I don't even have the words. |

How does that make the toymarket stupid?
It's supply and demand, and manufacturing costs, that determine how things are priced on the shelves. It's supply and demand that determines how much vintage stuff is worth. The vintage market goes up and down. Probably when the 25th first hit, the vintage market was sky high and people were making a mint. Now that the demand isn't as strong, people that wanted to stock up on their vintage or whatever aren't buying as much, the price comes down. Can't ever really compare old and new.

I'm still able to sell many of my vintage joes for a good buck.
The movie is the time to sell the vintage though, since if Transformers was any indication. They are going to go through the roof after the movie. |

Supply & demand, Alpine was mass produced as a toy back in the day.
He is now available as a collectible(not mass produced) in a market flooded with collectors.

The markets tend to get disjointed from time to time.

Okay, I can understand supply and demand, econimics 101. But it just goes back to my previous statement. How do people think this stuff is going to seriously go up in value in the long term if when there is so much of the prodect?
It's like a repeat of the bubble I saw building in the 90s with comic books before the market crashed. I can't be the only one who sees it! The only good news is when it finally does crash I'll finally be able to score a Silver PDD for under $50. |

Welcome to the Speculation Market, which is what the comics went thru.
Like anything, you have to know when the best time to unload your stuff is.

A Silver PDD sold for 52 today on ebay. So this "bubble bursting" will lower prices by 10%? Doesn't sound like a crash to me. This stuff happens like you said, yet certain items retain their value better than others. The reason the April ONeill figure is less than the new is because nobody cares about TMNT.

Also, the value of older items is in comparasion to what it sold for.
A vintage April is not the same as a current April. So to really compared, you'd have to wait the equivalent amount of time (10 years??) and see how much the current release April was worth. Then could see if the vintage was worth more then the current. The vintage was probably sold for 3 bucks at retail. So selling at 9 bucks now is a good increase in value for that figure.
