Is anyone else getting the feeling that the collectible toy industry may be about to crash? I'm basing my suspicions on a glut of merchandise on eBay, waning interest amongst the customer base and an economy that seems to be showing no signs of improvement any time soon. Maybe the mass appeal of collecting toys by grown-ass men (such as myself) is coming to a close. Say what you want, but I think we had a good run while it lasted...

It is what it is. Same thing happened with baseball cards and comic books. When the kids stop buying it, the countdown to the end begins. Outside of Asia, collectible toys are a nostalgia based business. Kids today will be nostalgic for console video games in future, but they'll probably be downloaded directly into your brain by then.

Well yes and no. Collectible toys are only subject to those who 's want them. iIn the late 80's early 90's 12" retro GI Joe's where hot. his was also the time that thos kids who had grown up with 12" GI Joes where now able to rebuy them albeit in modern retro form.
Now as far as toys today. Many of the 90's toys are flat at best and mostly unsellable. Spawn toys are a big example. As long as there are people who want toys the prices and interest will stay high. Right now the interest in summer money is fueling the sell off of collectables, thus creating a buyers market. Once fall hits and holiday shopping starts you will see a shift from sell to buy. So, "gather yea acorns". As far as future collectable worth. No one can say but you can tell that the toys we grew up with will have no relevance thus cheaper lower sales. While toys and games from today will hit a rebuy faze as those children grow up and want a piece of their past back.

Well, according to random people on the internet, literally everything is "headed toward a crash."

I don't see interest in collectible toys - as a whole - waning anytime soon, if ever.
In fact, I've noticed more and more Chinese collectors getting into the game. My suspicion is that this has come with the rise of their middle class over the past decades. This will only result in more interest, i.e. collectibility/prices rising... on certain items and lines, at least. The one factor I can see having a HUGE impact on collecting toys is the 3D printer. It's not going to completely devalue "original" items, by any means - after all, there will still be ways to tell if an item is vintage, especially the older it gets. But it will have a big effect on things, no doubt about it. I don't know how, exactly, but it will be interesting to find out.
