They'd really hate the cans on ML Black Widow and Black Cat, or any of the Kotobukiya Bishoujo line. But I digress. I wish them luck, and kind of understand their point of view. |

I support this 100% but the figures need a diverse look

After scouring toy stores in search of action figures that are appropriate toys for young girls, we discovered that the typical female action figure on the market today is not actually designed for girls at all (or even boys). Instead, most are created for the adult male collector, decidedly more Hooters than Heroine.

It's a tic of the wording, not anything intentional.
I understand their point, and I do hope they have success. My biggest concern is that they're trying to address a problem from one side. Teaching only one sex that both sexes are equal can't solve inequality. They should have marketed these to 'kids' instead of 'girls'. The "problem they're trying to address" is simply that there isn't much/anything in the way of action figures that are aimed at girls and have healthy body proportions. Don't make it more than what it is. Yeah, there's plenty of "empowerment language" but there's nothing particularly "anti boy." Maybe a tiny bit "Anti adult male collector" though. Or at least calling into question their tastes for hypersexualized characters. |

I think they get why action figure "hooters" are the way they are. They spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to get the breast-to-hip ratio on their figures "correct", so they should understand better than most how and why things can get "out of hand" if the designer isn't super disciplined and rigorous in their approach.
I appreciate that they recognize that they're leaving money on the table with some of their choices. This project seems more of an "anti-market-forces" campaign. Adult male collectors can feel free to support it, but that doesn't mean their tastes are going to influence its direction in any way. I do question their blind bag sales model and their ridiculously aggressive price point. They're never going to be able to hit $9 without some serious compromises and most would consider a $12-$13 blind bag unacceptable. Especially when there are only 7 different figures. In any case, I'm not a super hero figure collector and these figures, while attractive, seem a bit crude in the detail and articulation for my taste. So, I won't be participating in this Kickstarter, but I wish them luck. Last edited by SmokePants; 05-20-2014 at 03:08 PM.. |
