I am a MOC fan and love seeing toys from the 80s still MOC / MISB. Now I now a lot of Hisstankers say screw vintage MOC stuff and rip them open.
I think the packages from the 80s from MASK, Transformers, GI JOE, etc were so cool looking and the figures look cool MOC. Well my son has got into Ghostbusters big time. All he talks about is GB, listens to the soundtrack cd etc. So after spending a few hundred dollars I bought him Ray, Winston, Venkman MOC version 1 figures. I was planning on him keeping them MOC and hang them on his wall. Well yesterday I finally decided I bought these for my son, they are ONLY Toys and meant to be played with. So I let him open them up :-) The excitement on his face was priceless!! He was so excited to play with the proton packs and the rubber ghosts. I thought when I heard the plastic tearing away from the backing board my heart would sink, but the smile on his face was awesome!! Plus it was cool to thinking these 3 figures have been locked inside the package for 28 years and now able to do what they were meant to do, be played with. It was like taking a trip back to 1986 when my son opened those up yesterday. |

It is good that you let him open them. Those were some of my absolute favorite toys growing up as a kid. If you had made him leave them MOSC and hung them on the wall, I think that would have honestly been torture. Plus, he probably would have just opened them eventually anyway.
Seeing a kid happy with those cool old toys we loved as a kid is the more important thing anyway. At the very least, don't let him break the beams off the proton packs. :p

I liked the first wave of the RGB figures. Kenner lost me when they went with the freight features figures. Talk about jumping the shark.

Yeah I had all of version 1 when I was a kid. I remember having the blue Winston with the saw attachment and I had all the scream feature GB guys. He has been playing all day with these GB figures. Good move on my part. Awesome to see a 28 year old toy still brings out imagination in kids.

That's cool you bought him the vintage Kenner Ghostbusters. Even cooler that you let him open them up and enjoy them. I can understand the mixed feelings about keeping MOC vs. opening them up. I've had friends in a similar situation (for themselves as collectors). Your son sounds happy with his gifts so I think you made a great decision IMO.

I have a question. I really liked the Ecto 1 from the RGB line. I was wondering if it would fit the Mattel GB figures? After the dismal failure of the ecto 1 pre order Mattel was trying to do. you can find a really good Kenner Ecto for a good price.

man I LOVE TRGB.
I was really lucky with these....I got talking to a guy in 2007 on another board and he was desperate for Harry Potter stuff from Mattel that was only available in Europe. he offered me $$ but also told me to browse his Vintage toys....long story short for about 300 Euro worth of HP stuff I got version 1: Peter, Ray, Egon & Winston Power Pack: Louis and Janine Fright features Ray(to pilot Ecto II) Mr Stay Puft Ecto 1 & 2 Role play Trap, PKE Meter & Popper Proton gun. as well as all the Visionaries stuff I wanted.......8 figures and 4 vehicles everything was MISB.awesome stuff!!! |

I don't have kids, but I don't think I would give them anything that would be too expensive to replace if they destroyed it. I mean, plates are meant to be eaten off of, but I wouldn't let a kid eat his morning breakfast off the good china.
It really shouldn't take much money to delight a child. Some of my most vivid and fond toy memories as a child were of me going buck-wild at yard sales. Anyway, glad you have that memory. But next time he gets a sudden interest in an out-of-production toy line, BUY LOOSE! |
