I'm not to impressed at the new Movie Transformers figures.
I hope the movie doesn't suck.

The Protoform toys kinda lacked, because they basically turned into metallic boogers, and because they are not to scale with the rest of the movie line.
That being said, I stayed away from the Protoform figures. The movie toys, on the other hand, are awesome. They are well designed, and a really nice change from the usual TF figures. I only have Starscream, Barricade, and Bumblebee, but I am hooked. |

I'm keeping a very open mind about the movie personally...at first I wasn't wild about the 'bot designs, but the trailers have quickly won me over.
Honestly, though, the toys have been tempting me slightly, but only slightly. The Protoform toys looked pretty crappy, I think, and while some of the regular movie stuff looks cool, I've been able to hold back so far. Justin |

Honestly, though, the toys have been tempting me slightly, but only slightly. The Protoform toys looked pretty crappy, I think, and while some of the regular movie stuff looks cool, I've been able to hold back so far. Justin as big as an aircraft nut as I am(which I am sure you know after all my reasoning for a skystriker to be reissued for years now), I actually like Starscream from the movie. At first no. Its ironic that I like it now. In fact it took several months. It wasn't until I started seeing more recent reviews, better galleries, and then seeing it in person. Add to the fact that I realized I liked some older jet transformers with similar similarities that I hated from the movie Starscream. So I realized, it really wasn't as bad as I thought, I've seen worse, heck I've owned worse years back! Seeing it in person was the final straw. I had decided to get it a day prior after watching tfwire.com's video review. Me and my younger brother saw it and surprisingly he said it was awesome. I was like "huh? he actually paid attention to a transformer? weird. And he said it was awesome? Weirder". I saw it myself and decided minutes later I would buy it. Transforming him was a PLEASURE and a surprise. If you liked classics starscream's transformation, trust me you'll be blown away by this guy's. All in all, I realized that the fighter mode was actually okay, it looks nice from above. Its armed to the teeth and has so much playability that it helped me overlook his faults(I am not a fan of the undercarriage nor the lack of retractble gear. Yet its got good articulation, a sleek top body in fighter mode, and is way better than energon starscream, which he was compared to the most due to similar alt modes being based on the F-22. He has way more homages than anyone may have initially noticed, I hadn't noticed till messing with him for a couple of hours. Transformation is complex, but not frustrating. Nothing strikes me as being difficult. It strikes me as being intuitive. The automorph is great, its not so much self transformation, its more or less some areas moving in unison. Basically his entire fueselage collapses to form his broad chest. Not to mention he is way bigger in robot mode than in jet mode. If packed in robot mode he would have filled up most of the box. The most annoying thing is the sensitivity of the missle launcher buttons. You can turn off the autolaunch capability, but the missles can be fired through tabs as well, so since they are sensitive, I just mount the missles sometimes in their holders which fold down from the arms. In fighter mode he looks similar in scale to classics starscream, the overall length(F-22 is just a bit longer than the F-15), and the size of the seats is a good indicator. In robot mode he is an imposing giant compared to classics starscream. Honestly he is my fav movie transformer thus far. I don't think you will be dissapointed. He is very fun to play with, and I just see the arms in fighter mode as way more weapons, he is a decepticon who means business. Though I hope for a $40 leader version which is more sleeker and accurate, and know that starscream in the next 2 movie lines will undoubtedly better, I love this toy for what it is. I honeslty think hasbro has set a new standard by this movie line, the level of detail and the pleasing complexity of the transformations is great, and autommorph should be a permanent gimmick from here on out. These toys, in both sculpted detail, alt mode, and transformation make the armadaverse/energon/cybertron look more simple and cartoony than they already were. These are way more than just the typical"fold down to form legs and pop out arms" transformers. Not as frustrating nor fragile nor time consuming as the worst alternator, yet a way more pleasing, complex yet not difficult transformation in comparison to the armadaverse figures. I'm trying to find a better word than complex, since complex makes it sound hard, but really the transformations are not hard. Yet they are not brutally simple like recent previous mainlines. |
