There is no way HASBRO is making a brand new USS FLAGG. It just isnt going to happen....but, and there is always a but....
..What if Hasbro made just the SUPERSTRUCTURE as a playset that you could basically make the flight deck as big or as small as you want. What if they made it so that you could change its look by being able to add/subtract pieces For the naysayers, give it a thought. With the portable playset, you dont have the issue of space to display or store it, its up to YOU how you big you want that flight deck to be, whether you put the playset on a picnic table with some dark grey rubber mats or put it on a wide (13"width) shelf that could be 4 feet or 6 feet long. Even if you use a 4'x8' piece of plywood you could control the size of the carrier. The carrier playset could include accessory sticker sheets and 3 rubber mats that could be set down on the kitchen table or coffee table, picnic table or shelf. After all it was originally called the COFFEE TABLE. Even taking some of those stackable rubbermaid shelves so that you can line them up and have an interior would totally make this work. I have brought this up as an affordable way Hasbro can make the USS FLAGG. Face it, its a tough economy and JOE isnt as popular but this GI JOE and Hasbro hasnt given up on him. Niether are we. I would rather see this than that abomination called THE PIT, that was a waste of plastic, time and effort. This playset could also be designed to be customizable, You could make a frieghter, destroyer, granted you would have to have some pieces that clip on and off but it could be done. There could also be some clip on ANTI AIRCRAFT GUNS as well as missile launchers This vice clips could also serve a double function as to clamp down or anchor the thin but sturdy rubber mat. Munitions trailer and tractor , fuel truck, blast shield that flips up. Granted Im sure we coiuld add other things, but I think Hasbro could really pull this off. Its not the vintage one, but it does offer us a chance to have a FLAGG or ship of our own. For those of you that want to pay for a re-issued FLAGG, just buy a vintage one and enjoy. For those that complain its too big, where would I put it, here is a valid option. GI JOE was about the regular Joe that was on the frontline, not just fighting COBRA. Today's military are our heroes and they are characters unto themselves. We want something realistic but also with a touch of future. I get that. Having a playset for JOES would mean it would need a crew, it would mean having other vehicles support it---HOVERCRAFT-KILLER WHALES, LCACS, SPEC OPS, CARGO CHOPPERS-multi roles, F-35s or Harriers or OSPREYs. If they re-issue the SKY STRIKER with foldable wings, two seater and better missiles, there is something that could be done for later on. Hasbro, if you are watching, I think its a potential idea. You have done great bringing back some classic vehicles, why not a classic playset. The projected cost would be $100 to $120, adding on some FLIGHT DECK CREW 5 packs w/air boss or shooter, Hasbro could really do well. The flight ops and main bridge could have lights/sounds, Radar/comm stations, sickbay, crew quarters, Looking at the large scale playsets that are out, expecially of the FISHER PRICE IMAGINEXT, I dont see it being any bigger than that, in fact, I see it as a three story, fold out. Just as the FLAGG was open on the Starboard side, make it the same here, time to go, fold it and pick it up by the handle and go home. What accesorries would you want to see? What functions if any would you want to see? Modular? (possibly to add on in the lower decks or have inner hangar deck crews with forklifts, pallets, engines? Chap mei made an Osprey, its out there somewhere, but given the size of the avg FLAGG flight deck, coffee table fits approprately. The boats and hovercraft could operate on carpet or hardwood floors without difficulty. |

Dimensions are what are throwing me off, I figure at least three decks like in the second and third post, but cut off that under the deck section and let the superstructure just sit atop the deck. I have to get some hardboard and figure Ill make a mock up and go from there. I have an extra superstructure so Ill be outfitting that first and going to the mock up as ideas and theories present themselves. I want the mock up to be able to open and close, figure Ill try making a table top carrier first and then making a helicopter carrier.
Any suggestions and ideas are appreciated and Ill try to incorporate them into planning and fabrication. |

Yes, I would buy a flight con/Flagg superstructure playset. If it came without the flight deck or hull, that means that Hasbro could put more time, money, and detail into the superstructure tower.

Im working on making the superstructure a standalone, as it is, its still pretty big and probably wont need to fold. Even with no lights or electronics, Hasbro could still invest more in paint apps or just really good detailing.
The orange crane came from a cheapie consruction set, probably still find at kmart. The rubber mats that are used in garages, are quick, easy to put together and light, they would be perfect for protecting a coffee or kitchen table while at the same time, making it an easier landing for incoming aircraft. ie wont crack or break landing gear Even it its not modular and just a stand alone piece, I think Hasbro would go balls out with detailing. If they could keep it under a hundred bucks, I think they would have a winner, accessory packs for fuelies and gear, munitions and gear, flight deck officers etc could be in multiple packs and still not be offensive to retailers while adding variety and essential components to the FLAGG playset. Its about 2 foot long, and 2 foot wide. still smaller than the BMF. Im not counting the mast, just the top most part of the superstructure. I think just for play value, I would make it a bit more blocky, something closer to the helicopter carrier. Last edited by Skipper; 07-06-2013 at 02:48 PM.. |

As much as I love the idea of the New FLAGG in a SUPERSTRUCTURE form, Id like something that goes in a new direction a VTOL carrier or a Heli Carrier. Just to switch things up, but I think in order to spur interest in GI JOE and keep it fresh and alive they should release a new sea going Vessel.
We need something modern to keep Joe afloat. Even in a modern Navy the FLAGG wouldve been retired for a new design, and since this is GI JOE with cutting edge tech A little far fetched for sure. But in order to compete Hasbro needs to ditch some of the old designs and start being edgy again
