Hey all,
so I have question to all the fathers out there who also are collectors. My son and I were playing in my toy room where I have a bunch of stuff loose and some MOC and he found a 2013 Red Power ranger from the MMPR this is the shiny red ranger that was thrown in with the mega force waves. He thought it was so cool and wanted to open it and asked if he could have it for christmas or birthday. I told that it was for my collection, but that I could try to get him one. (cant find one) Well now the back story is that I am not a HUGE Power rangers fan at all, I bought this fig cause it was rare and I do fondly remember the the first MMPR show. the figs its about 20 bucks on ebay, I am torn cause I kinda wanna give it to him mainly cause I know he loves power rangers way more than I do! But also I know hes gonna tear it up LOL!!! and he does have a pretty good set of rangers about 12 total that are his alone. SO DADS out there any advice on this? the way i see it is all my stuff is for him in the future but any thoughts on this

When I was little, my dad used to collect old music disks, and he wont let anybody touch them. Once me and my brother were alone at home and we decide to use them as Frisbees. One of them got scratched and wont work any more. We both got a nice spanking that night. Since then I not only did not touch any of his stuff, but I also did not want to do anything with him. And that I guess made him a distant presence in my life which is the way it is even now. I do talk to him and all but its more of an obligation.
So my questionis, is your collection/toy more important or valuable than a life long relationship??

I hate to be "that guy," but a toy is a toy. Those things are made for a kid to play with, so let the kid play.

It's only a $20 figure. If it was over $50 then I could see keeping it back. He will have a priceless memory of opening that baby up on christmas morning.

I say go for it too. In the end they are toys. If it were at a higher price point or a specialty shop item (DC Collectibles for example) then I'd think twice. Some lines are more brittle than others and prone to breaking easily.
He'll remember that one Power Ranger because of the bond formed by your mutual love of toys. My 4 year old is obsessed with super heroes, in part because he sees my MU figures and comic collection. So I've gotten him about 30-40 MU figures of his own - mostly purchased for under retail. Now he doesn't play with them but has them on his bureau displayed as his "collection." I do make it clear that while they are toys, they don't hold up well to rough play. Take it easy because when it breaks, there won't be another one stashed in my collection. |

I would never let my kid mess with my collection granted she is a girl and more interested in barbies but why give a kid a collectible when you know they are just going to destroy it. You could still get that same bond by buying your kid his own toys.
If you spent time and money on something that you care about then you should keep it safe. There are enough other toys to get your kid, theres no need to ruin something that is a piece of history in a sense. Just my two cents.

I must admit I hide most of my stuff from my son. However, when he finds something. I let him play with it. I don't even say be careful. He is good with toys, he cares about them in the same way that I do. I think it would hurt him just as much me if he broke one. I let him play with them because they are toys and are designed to be played with. They inspirer imagination and excitement and if my Dad had a toy of character of something I loved that was unlike anything I had ever seen or could ever get I know how I would feel at that age if I could not play with it.

That retro Red Ranger is worth $20? Huh. I found that a month back and bought it at normal store price because I thought it'd look cool, though the proportions are definitely odd.
Actually, if you wanted to really spoil your kid, you could buy him this... Amazon.com: Bandai Tamashii Nations Mighty Morphin Red Ranger "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" S.H. Figuarts Action Figure: Toys & Games It's a bit pricey, but I own one and can say it's the ultimate Power Rangers toy and they have more with Green, White, and Pink comes out next month... Only thing of worry is how old you kid is as there are a number of switchable hands and weapons for the toy as well that he could lose. The packaging though is designed to be kept and to store the parts if need be. |

This. I have lots and lots of stuff that my little boy likes to play with. I've given up trying to make my Jabba's Palace and Cantina figure displays look organized because he loves to just pull them all out and take 'em. There are things I don't want him to manhandle, like my Sideshow figures. But when he took special interest in my Sideshow Darth Maul (meaning he grabbed it and ran) I went digging for my old Hasbro version and gave it to him.
