I was sure I saw the Marvel Films logo on there somewhere, but I know Lionsgate as a part of it too.
The movie isn't terrible. In fact, if you just splice all the footage of Frank Castle together it's pretty good. It's just the background story with Jigsaw and his psycho brother that is awful. So awful in fact that it's almost unwatchable. |

I just hate the fact that they've tried and failed three times already to make a good Punisher movie. It should be the easiest character to adapt to film and yet no one seems capable of doing him justice. Maybe it's time to go the Avengers Hulk route. Put him in as a supporting role in another Marvel film, and then develop that into his own thing.
After all, featured appearances in Spider-man and Daredevil comics is where the Punisher got his start in the comics.

I agree. I always thought Punisher should have a movie that is a blend of character expose and gritty military thriller. The 1986 5 issue mini-series would be a great bases for a movie, and I know there are a number of other great Punisher stories they could adapt from. Plus I think they've failed to really find an actor that captures the character. To me the Punisher is someone who is extremely complex and determined, but disregards other traits because they don't serve his goal. I think he's extremely interesting and I can't stand the how simple and single minded they've portrayed him. They miss the fact that he's actually punishing himself. Frank Castle lived and his family died. To that end he's dedicated his existence (you can't call it a life) to one cause that will never actually succeed, and will eventually mean his own end. I would love to see a movie made of Punisher Year One, with a follow up being the original miniseries.

I'm not a punisher fan - he's sort of a.. meh... character to me. if he never appeared in another comic I probably wouldn't even notice. BUT... from what I have seen of him- he's fun as a foil to a hero- so give his rights to Sony and let him show up in the next spider-flick or have him be a darkhorse 3rd party in Daredevil- Matt could be defending Frank in a murder trial by day while daredevil is mixing it up with the Punisher by night...

I like both of those ideas.

What are these Punisher movies everyone talking about ... underground snuff films? Sound like Punisher would be a dude wearing a gimp mask and ass-less chaps

You read my mind RoG, but then what else would I expect from a Punisher super fan? ;) I think the Year One story would work great as a first film with the mini series as a follow up. I would also love to see him appear in something like Spider-Man or Daredevil as a foil, but not as the main foe. This reminds me of the Spider-Man cartoon from the 90s.. and makes me wish they actually got Morbious or Scorpion into a Spider-Man film.

The difficulty with the Punisher as a film character is that he can be very one-dimensional. Actors and writers tend to want to flesh out their characters, so they end up injecting too much personality into Frank. In the Thomas Jane version, he's an alcoholic which adds nothing to the character. In War Zone, he literally breaks down and sobs at one point. The Punisher should still be weeping for his family's loss. He's moved past that and is now more-or-less an elemental force. He's the boogeyman for criminals.
I think the way that War Zone treated Jigsaw was ok in parts. When they took him into completely comical levels with the recruitment drive, it was insufferable. However, since the Punisher is one-dimensional, you have to give his villains personality to make up for Frank's flatness. Therefore, I can understand their choices with Jigsaw's portrayal. The problem with both the Thomas Jane version and War Zone is the tone. They're both too goofy. They try to flesh out Frank as a character and yet treat the material with an aloofness. The filmmakers obviously aren't versed in the material and are doing the knee-jerk response to "comic book character" by making it hokey. Honestly, the best Punisher film is the Dolph Lundgren version. He might not wear the skull, but the character is hardcore and dangerous. And it has an actual, focused story to it. Speaking of Punisher, I really want MU wave 19 to come out...now. |

I think the best stuff to develop for Punisher into film or television are the Ennis Max series. As a TV series, you can have the Punisher take on a different crime ring in each season. This The Wire, but it's the Punisher instead of cops. You could cover different types of crimes or perversions. White slavery. Drugs. Cults.
And I'm not insulting the Punisher by calling him one-dimensional. As others have said, he's focused. Deal with that. See how far he's willing to go to take down the bad guys. Even sacrifice anyone helping him. I just don't want to see him cry. Ever. Or wave at a little girl. |
