Hi guys,
I know this site has great customizers so I thought I would ask your opinion. I want to build a playset for my son. He loves playing with my Joes and more recently the new TMNT figures. The scale of the figures are pretty close so I thought about building a city scene with an underground sewer that could be used by both figure lines. I know this will be large but I fortunatly have the space in our basement. My question is what to build it out of. I thought plywood for durability but I've been reading about davey board. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Most of the custom dioromas use a foam core type product but I don't know if that would hold up to play standards of a kid. Thanks |

If you are building a sewer you could rip a large piece of PVC tubing for a side view. Then paint it black/grey/or brick. then use another building material for street level or underground rooms.

If you've got the room and it's NOT going anywhere and it's going to be played with... plywood is a great start- it will be heavy as heck- but hold up to serious playing. The 1/2 ripped PVC is great for the sewers. Sounds like your kid will have loads of fun!

foamcore can be tough if put together well and layered. just depends on the type of play... the age of your kid probably has a lot to do with the choice of plywood/foamcore. If they play nice with things then foamcore should be fine- if there is a lot of explosions and stomping figures- it might not hold up so well.

I want to give them a nice sized playset but at the same time I don't want it to weigh a ton. Is there any material that you guys know of that I'm overlooking?

You can also find all types of other materials to work with. I like to find styrofoam pieces from appliances or new TV's. they usually have nice clean lines and shapes that you can use for buildings in the city scene. Foam mats (like the puzzle step mats sold at harbor frieght) are also very durable, and highly formable with a heat gun. You can coat them with plasti-dip, and then they are easy to paint. many costumers use the foam mats. I have also found PVC sheets at a local plastics store, which is very rigid, but thin like foamcore.
Another idea is to go to the $1 store and look at things differently than their intended purpose. Like the small "milk crate" boxes that stack well could be turned upside down and used for building. Just place cardboard or foamcore inside to cover slots. Have fun!

Those are some great ideas! I haven't given much "out of the box" thought to this project. Great tips from all of you. especially like the milk crate idea.

I think look at this for ideas
Action Figure, Action Figures toys, collectables, action figure size, city action figures, wooden city kits, dollhouse kits, Action Figure City Kit I think wood is the best bet, my kids are 3 and 4 and i dont think foam core would hold up. it can be strong but at the least its gonna get all dented up
