For my day job, which is really more of an "all of the time job" than just a day job, we create games. Yesterday I had a long talk with a factory rep about the new child safety testing requirements and in the end I pretty much decided that we should stick to games for the 13+ group, since that's basically what we already do and because the new guidelines are so ridiculous.
I plan to hit a few safety testing seminars at Toy Fair next month to see what I can learn, but the initial information doesn't sound good at all. A case of over-regulation, I think.

I work in game publishing and not toy manufacturing -- two different industries -- but a lot of the regulations are the same. And as we expand into more mass market stores I find myself spending more and more time on child safety. It's not fun but it is important. |

Will do, and thank you. I've been reading the forums for quite a while now but I only decided this morning to register and post.

Its like our government is seeing how hard and how fast it can run us into another depression.
Guess nobody who put this bill thru cared to think of the tens of thousands of businesses, and hundreds of thousands of people here in the states that will be affected. What? The poor? Screw them. |

The news said that the only way to sell a used children's product (this includes clothes, carseats, ANYTHING for children under 12) is to have it tested for lead, with testing costing $25-$100 per item.
WTF is wrong with congress? Way to help the economy by hamstringing people who buy second hand stuff for their family.

Man, it's a good thing that when I go to the local shows, I don't sell "toys for children under age 12"....I only sell "vintage collectibles for adult collectors". I can even put up a sign that clarifies that fact for any cops not smart enough to see it on their own.
See....no problem with the law now, right? Besides, I never sell more than a few dollars worth of stuff to kids anyway, so not being able to sell to kids won't really affect me. All I see EBay doing is enforcing a policy that no one under 13 can bid on items....which I'm pretty sure they already have anyway since minors can't enter "legal contracts" and as EBay loves to remind us, a bid is a "legal contract".

Well, here is the loophole for Ebay.
Your User Agreement While using eBay, you will not: use our sites or services if you are not able to form legally binding contracts, are under the age of 18, or are temporarily or indefinitely suspended from our sites; You are selling a product to an Adult, what that adult does after the purchase is their responsibility.

Just remember that when you start your coffee up in the morning in your machine made in China and when you put your shirt on made in Korea then when you put your pants on made in Indonesia and dont forget your shoes made in Vietnam......oh and when you eat your breakfast cooked in pots from Europe and then ate on plates made in China.......then you go to work and listen to your favorite song on the radio made in Japan............that this could be one reason America is in debt.........
