Since us JOE fans are stuck in a bit of stasis until the "Retaliation" line kicks back up again in March, what have you been doing to fill you collecting addiction? Since I have run out of things in the JOE and STAR WARS lines to get excited about, I did something I told myself I would never do, I started collecting another line. That line being Masters of the Universe Classics. Since I wanted a big head start, I purchased someones collection (M.I.P.), and after opening several of these things, I have to say I am impressed. Even though these things are pricey, especially if you try to land these on the secondary market, they are actually worth it. Great sculpting, great articulation, and overall great display appeal. After setting a few of these things up for display near some of my JOES, I can't believe how inferior my (even Pursuit Or Cobra) JOES look. I can honestly say I am now head first in wanting everything in the classics line.
I grew up with what I consider the big four, STAR WARS, JOE, TRANSFORMERS and MOTU. I would say that my JOE collection takes priority since I collect everything from the vintage 80s to "Retaliation," Star Wars would be next with mostly newer versions of the vintage line, and now MOTU. I have to say though, other than a couple of pieces from the vintage and 200x lines, I have no desire to collect anything outside of the classics line. I pondered getting maybe some of the main characters from the vintage line but immediately dismissed the idea because of how inferior those versions would be to the classics line. At least with the 80s JOES you have some decent articulation, this cannot be said about vintage MOTU figures. I almost forgot Transformers, I had tried to collecting those things a few years ago, but the price, especially on the vintage pieces, scared me right out of the market, so I sold what I had and just decided to stick to the Cartoons and movies. This is mainly just blog about what I like, but I am interested to hear what other lines my fellow TANKERS are excited about at the moment. After being disgusted with the prices of the subscription figures and the overall "cheapness" of some of the "Retaliation" figures, I wonder if my JOE collecting (like my Star Wars) collecting is about to become very specific. |

On one hand buying into a new line just to fill some need to buy something just seems wrong and weak to me. On the other hand, at least you bought into a quality toy line. I didn't even know MOTUC existed until I found them at TRU. Then I was hooked. They really are fantastic toys.
Right now I'm looking forward to iGear's Brawn and Cosmos figures. They should be coming in this month. Plus there is MMC's Knight Morpher series. I got the big Cyclops figure, and now the Airborne Squad is just around the corner. Finally Play Arts Kai's Catwoman and Harley Quinn. Those two look like they will be a lot of fun to photograph. |

Actually I have been collecting the MOTUC figures for a while. With the"no new Joes till next year" happening. I have been filling holes in my collections. I am not impressed by the movie Joes, I will be leaving them alone while I keep filling the holes.

I've been collecting MOTUC since the beginning but I got out of it for a while and now I have a bunch of wholes I'm looking forward to filling while Joe is on hold. Actually to be honest I don't know if I'm going back to Joe until they do another classics line.

I am not sure I will be picking up a lot of the new Joes either. I have been doing a lot of hole filling as of late. I really love my 80's collection and have been buying up those items that I associate with memories. Right now I have finished my Pee-Wee's Pay House collection and working on Wheeled Warriors. The new movie toys are so lack luster I don't even feel the need to buy them.

With all the money I saved with no Joes, I was able to purchase two sets of the GIJCC FSS. Living in the Infestation Capital of Scalpers I decide to take matters into my own hands. I have been helping out my fellow SoCal collectors with whatever they need for their Collections for the past two months. I have gotten a few MU and Avengers figures with the new waves(She Hulk, Punisher, Nick Fury). Nothing to get me into collecting a whole new line though. For me it's always been and always will be G.I. Joe. Just this past week I've been finding POC w5 at Drug stores so that's a YEAH for me.

You know what really bugs me the most? The lack of articulation seems to be catching on at all the toy companies. I don't mind paying a premium for a good toy but paying $25 plus for a mash up of parts Joe line like the FSS, kind of bothers me.

Now the costs of labor in China (and Gas, and virtually everything in their production costs) has gone up so much that the only way they can keep these 3 3/4" figures at a MSRP under $10 (and even then many retailers sell higher than that), is to start cutting things...accessories and articulation, mostly. Hasbro knows that if 3 3/4" figures get above $9.99 they completely fall out of "impulse buy" range. Even now they barely cling to that status, as for decades the common wisdom was that it was "Under $5" that was the impulse buy range. But when single figures reach a point where they're almost NEVER a "buy for the kid while you're wandering the aisles" purchase and shift to a "Birthday and Christmas" purchase, the industry will likely be well and truly sunk save for that last, desperate clutch of hardcore adult collectors. And before anyone starts in with the "Well they should just manufacture them in America/somewhere else, then!" business, the problem is that there really aren't any other "Chinas" out there. There are a select few places where you can still manufacture for less (Vietnam has been somewhat popular in recent years), but the economic conditions in those countries are such that they'll start reaching the point China's at now MUCH sooner. Plus, they simply don't have the manpower China does. As for the US, unless they repeal just about every safety and environmental law on the books, and the minimum wage as well, it would cost vastly more to produce here in the US just for labor alone. On a more on-topic note: MotU is a great line. It took me a while to warm up to them, but once I picked up that re-issue He-Man, I was hooked. Now there's only a few characters that I personally want to finish out my collection (Roboto, Leech, and maybe Webstor and Stinkor), because certain figures, even if they're considered "core" characters by some, really do nothing for me (Whiplash, Mekaneck, Buzz-Off, and Sy-Klone spring to mind). I think MOTUC is a fantastic deal for a direct-to-customer line. Especially when you compare them to the Joe FSS, which I skipped due to the high cost (roughly same price for a figure half the size). Thankfully, I have a hook-up for the MOTUC line, so I don't have to pay for most of them. I have invested money in the line, but I think they've covered (or will be covering next year) just about every character I would want.
MU and Joes are my main lines. With no new Joes coming till next year, MU is in the sole #1 spot. MU has wave 20 and maybe 21 coming by the end of the year and a few multipacks, but it's not too much stuff. After getting the 4 TMNT turtles, I'm essentially done with that line. I don't feel a need to get all the other characters. Although, I may pick up some of the more monstrous characters if they look cool. I started getting some import vinyls of Ultraman and Godzilla monsters. I like picking up monsters and characters from other lines that I think will fit in with MU as something for the Avengers (and company) to fight. I realize it's probably bad to spend money just to spend money, but I like taking the slow periods to fill out my collection a bit with odds and ends. |
