Awesome but expensive. Another line that I suspect many people didn't appreciate the depth and innovation of until after they were older and the line was already out of US stores. It supposedly went longer in Europe (and several sets were released over there that never were released in the US), which is part of what makes it so expensive today. For a "failed" 80's toy line it has a pretty robust and enthusiastic collector base.
From a storytelling perspective, I loved that it had different "branches" for its' military. From a toy perspective, the toys had some of the best interaction (between toys) of any toy line I've seen. Big vehicles could often store/carry little vehicles, etc... (I still have the big bad guy ship that can carry two smaller fighters on its' wings and the little ATV in its belly...The Shadowbat Bomber, I think?). Hasbro could stand to learn a thing or two from this line when it comes to G.I. Joe vehicles (imagine if the HISS Scout connected to the HISS tank in a way that was both functional and cool-looking). Not only are the collectors prices high today, but Starcom was much more expensive when it was originally released.
( At least in Europe. We were in Germany, the Netherlands and Austria at this time ) Only the normal figures were priced in the range of "Star Wars". ( So almost every kid bought a R2D2 or a Darth Vader, instead of relatively unknown space commanders. ) Vehicles etc. were priced "out of this world". For kids, most Star Wars flying objects were too, but Starcom was a new series. As far as I know, it was only aired in the UK. |

Ive read in a filmmag years ago, that STARCOM had good ratings in Japan and England, but the production costs were enormous ( for its time ). Because the toy series was a commercial failure, Coleco stopped the animation series too.
COLECO made quite a lot of promotion for STARCOM here, but almost nobody knew what it was. Most thought of it as a rip-off mix of Star Wars and Playmobil. I was really impressed by the animation series, a really high standard that even surpassed Marvel/Sunbow. And the soundtrack used Gustav Holsts "Mars" suite from his classical "Planets" symphony. Its really a shame, that only 3 ( or 4 ? ) episodes are available on a single DVD. ( A few more on old videotapes, at least in german language issued by POLYBAND ) But even these old VHS tapes are sold for around $ 20 - 30 $, each has only one episode ! |

Stardom was the bomb! My brother and I had a ton of those things. They were awesome! The magnets, the little guys, the little motors, everything about them was so cool! I wish they still had toys like that today that would be sweet!

Always thought starcom was neat, supposedly one of my friends has boxed toys in storage (along with visonaries and other neat toys of the era). Toys are too pricey for me, but I did recently pick up an animation cell of a shadow bomber chasing one of the small fighters.
