Well, 2011 rather than 2010--it appears I time-traveled. This isn't just for me but for you all too. This isn't best in general, but what's best or most memorable for you. Or you can even spout off the stuff you hated--just what affected you in the world of toys. I'm sure people like Zedhatch can just post links to their own reviews here and stuff as well.
This year was probably my second best toy year since childhood, 2007 probably being the best with the joy I felt with those first two 25th 5 packs. I got several key vintage items I had always wanted and my toy budget went through the roof (I hope that kicks down some this year--I hope). Overall, there were many good and bad highlights. First the bad... Mattel keeps throwing absolute crap 3.75" toys our way..the Green Lantern line was just awful and it could have been a huge line with many desirable characters. Another Matty epic fail. Hasbro's continued re-use of the first Marvel U buck was bad. So many potentially awesome characters saddled with that inferior base. Also many waves just had terrible paint apps (again) that made hunting down acceptable ones a chore. Movie lines in general--just a continued crap fest. If it wasn't a comic-line themed character or design 75% were just awful and worthless IMO. This goes for IM2, Thor, Captain America, GL, Pirates, etc. Hasbro/Star Wars: A lot of good stuff to be sure, but distribution was just awful this year--I've never seen it so bad. It seemed like endless waves of revision figures were everywhere with no end in sight. Matty again....Young Justice? I may have been tempted to get into this line if I'd ever seen any waves beyond the first one....This was one of those lines I just wasn't going to pay shipping for, and well--that left me with a lot of wave one in my area and nothing else. Matty MOTUC: Not many complaints here.....I just wish they'd get on the ball, and realize they should keep about 8-10 of the core characters in continual availability.....Everyone should be able to get He-Man, Man at Arms, Teela, Skeletor, Mer Man and Beast Man at any time. It would keep the line and subscription more safe I think. Just a small nitpick there. GI Joe: While I like Renegades I think it was just an big WTF on distribution and release. The cartoon was basically over before we even got a figure, and now stores are loaded with a cartoon based line with no cartoon. I understand the complexities of releases and so forth--it just seemed handled poorly. That's it for my nitpicks and negatives. Now for the good stuff....

The good.....
Joes: Wow, so many great update to classics this year. Viper, Cobra Trooper, Steel Brigade--awesome. Some were less spectacular like Recondo, but man, when they hit it they hit it well. Airtight, Lifeline, Sci-Fi, Law, Zombie-Viper, Techno-Viper, Renegade SS and Scarlett...even renegade Duke was a winner. Overall too many great figures to list. While I could have cared less about a Skystriker release I did buy a couple, and am happy people got their own classic re-imagined. The Hiss Tank update is amazing with the all black and all red being the clear winners. A great design. The Black Dragon was also great, and I consider it more like an updated Fang II rather than a true large VTOL, but it works for the Joe vehicle scale--I like it. Greeeat Joe year. I hope they pull off a success with the sequel toys! Marvel Universe: We got a lot of great figures this year, and got some needed spots filled for team rosters. First just let me say several figures made it a great year alone, but we had a plethora...Cable (maybe the best of the year and I'm not fond of Cable), the great JL Cyclops, Dr Strange, a nice updated Namor, Astonishing wolverine, Commander Rogers, X-23 (so pose able she is almost too flexible), Metal Absorbing Man (or metal Vag Man)...all great single spacks. MU also did some great multi-packs. Silver Samurai, Taskmaster, Jean Grey 1st Class, Power man and Iron Fist, Quicksilver, wonder Man, and Daredevil and Bullseye with the new MU body type--awesome. The 3 packs were also great......I'll just say finally getting Sue Storm and Rocket Raccoon was a dream. Nice sets with a nice variety. The big sets were kind of lackluster, but I did enjoy getting a proper Captain America! Great year for MU, and a nice winning trend going into 2012... MOTUC: I'm pretty new to this line, but good stuff. I'm not sure on all the release dates, but some wonderful figures and I look forward to getting some more soon. She-Ra v2, BG Teela, Captain Glenn, BG Evil-Lyn, Swift Wind, and Battle Cat spring to mind as superb figures. There's more but...I really can't remember the release dates because I'm so new to this line. Now to go back and get Vikor, Tri-Klops, Panthor, etc...Hah. Revoltech: Awesome stuff this year.....the updated Eva Unit 2 and 0, the Sci-Fi line with the Godzilla and Gamera monsters, and the great Fraulein line. Again, I can't remember all of the release dates. But Plug-suit Asuka and Test suit Makinami Mari are superb. Bandai SH Monsterarts: Gahhhhh, it is the Godzilla I've always wanted....that is all. Nerdgasm. Star Wars: Clone Wars stole this year...a bunch of great figures.....yes, they are a bit thin and some are clunky, but the show is great and helps my enjoyment of the line. Armored Savage Oppress is amazing...also glad to see the updated Jedi costumes, and continued use of the SA sculpt for the clones. Vintage: Bespin Han...this one is full of win-excellent figure. Bastila Shan--I don't care if it could be better-I'm glad to have it to fill out my KOTOR squad. Fordo- great figure and character all around. Seems bad distribution caught up with this line a bit--2012 looks to make up for it though. Vintage purchases: This was the outstanding part of my year. I got some of my grails thanks to fellow and former Tankers, and just saving up for them. The joy of my year to be sure. Finally broke down and reclaimed Boba Fett, Boushh, R2-D2, and Biker Scout. ARAH MOC Lady Jaye, Big Ben and IG. Red Back Ninja Viper and Crankcase. Takara MIB Little Harry, RAM, and Wolverine. Takara MOC Snake Eyes, Cobra Trooper, and Duke. Also got some loose figures and vehicles like Starduster, Keel haul, and filled out Mission Brazil finally. A Moray with box. Also finally got a complete SM Lynx, and I think it possibly one of the best Joe Vehicles ever. Picked up some Advanced Dungeons and Dragons figures which was great. Also got some MOC Matchbox Robotech figure Lisa and Max on the cheap. Expensive and fulfilling year for toys in my House. I suspect 2012 will rely more on quality rather than quantity after a pricey year, but I look forward to it. Here's looking forward to Covergirl, Quarrel, Footloose, and Bruce Willis for Joe, and Scarlet Witch, Medusa, new Hulk, and Hercules for MU. i hope the companies have some rabbits in their hats!

Well I'll start with the bad. I think 2011 taught me that MU is not my cup of tea. This is comming from a mega Marvel fan too.
I think the larger figures are good...Thanos, Thing, Hulk etc. ALOT of the other figures though just flat out lack. They are best kept MOC imo. There is just something "frail" about them. I've had alot of articulation issues, joints that just didn't bend correctly or were loose.....I finally learned my lesson. Thanks but no thanks. DC 3 3/4 is just ridiculous. I have to assume this line is for kids. Hasbro: My favorite. I love what you do with Joe, SW and TF but there is some kind of issue with the distribution that is getting increasingly worse for the last 2 yrs. I still have Arctic Destro on my pegs next to the likes of Thor and IM2 figures and there is almost no sign of current product. Lately SW is making a comeback but still has awhile to go. I don't get it. |

Great recaps PIG!! Thanks for taking the time to do it.
Well I started collecting this year, first playing catch up with MU. Once that was done, I moved on to catch the Clone Wars figures and some TVC. Once I was done there, I started 30th Joes, then cherry picked the best from ROC and POC. 120 figures later, I love it!! From a new collectors perspective, I appreciated the detail and quality of the Joe figures a lot. The CW figures are fun and very nice to look at. My heart is with MU, and I am looking forward to some great figures next year. Also, going to cherry pick the MLs. I started as a MOC collector, but my collection grew too big for my display area, so I opened everything. Shocked at first, but I now glad I did it. So much more room to grow and expand. I am glad I got to meet some great guys on the boards, and I look forward to many new freindships next year. Cheers!!

2011, the year I spent way too much on toys. The year I spent more money on DCUC figures than ever before, and now it's ending. The year I really tried to get back into Joes but just couldn't. The year I can say I really like most of the MU releases, even though I only bought like 3 figures. The year MOTUC rocked my world more than any year before. Last but certainly not least, the year I got married. 2011: A great fucking year.

2011, to me is the year GI Joe Finally brought it. From Low Light to Airtight to Zombie Viper there were tons of figures I just loved this year from Joe and I honesly feel like the joe line became something I wanted it to be. Joe has been VERY disapointing over the past few years for me but this year I feel like they came back with a vengance, I HOPE this continues with the new movie and toyline.
MU, Lots of love here, from updated versions of my faves Daredevil and Bullseye and Power Man and Iron Fist to fun additions like Darkhawk (whom I never thought I woud see) to Dr. Strange. MU continues to please. However, I will point out my X-23 has issues with the hips. I won't say a perfect year but MU is far in front of the pack. Star Wars, Great stuff, I wish I could have found some of it. I have never had so much trouble with Star Wars and distro before (even in the lean legacy waves) but this year has been horrid. Not much else I can say. Matty/GL-A Joke, an insult and a line that should have never been. Those designs were crap even if directed at children and Matty knew it. Other-Assassan's Creed, PTOC ect. Some great stuff in these lines but nothing that was awe inspireing. However I will point out I have yet to find the MK and Street fighter stuffs as I don't live close to a TRU.

For the good...I can't say enough about what Star Wars brought with the last quarter of 2012.
The Cantina aliens are pretty much FLAWLESS. Just beautifully sculpted and articulated. Personally I've been keeping them in an arms reach to use as some "creative influence" for my writing. The line is on fire and shows signs of getting hotter in the next few months. If you want perfection in a 3 3/4 line hop on board. Joes also did everything right and I wish I was fortunate enough to review some of the 30th figures but the distribution is so awful I can't find them!! Judging the line on what I know with POC, Skystriker etc.......I mean POC Lowlight should sum this up in it's entirety. Great stuff, if you can find it! Transformers. While I can't say anything about the movie line, what I've collected from Generations in 2011 was damn near perfect. Big characters with excellent articulation, color apps and transformation. None of these seem to "break the bank" and for the most part were readily available. I had a very good time with Transformers this year. I had one slight issue with with Red Alert molds. Sometimes the arm joints were loose but overall nothing that should deter one from picking up this line. I sincerly hope 2012 brings a return to Generations. S.H. MonsterArts: Quite simply a Godzilla's fan dream come true. The 1st release of Godzilla was almost flawless. A beautiful sculpt, great articulation, box art and packaging are all an A+. The downside is the price. These start at about 70.00 a pop so being a completist with these, especially if you collect other lines is tough on the wallet. While I was gung ho about getting every one, I think I might limit it to my top 5 and then take it from there. MOTUC: In my opion this line is the best bang for the buck....every figure is always outstanding and I can't think of a single flaw in the MOTUC line! |
