i collected vitage bb cards, never the new stuff (90-2k) and as a result, don't feel like i have a large pile of nothing. granted, even old ones don't bring the bi bucks anymore but i saved and bought hank aaron, ted williams, etc. still have most of the rookies from the roids era as well but those all tanked with their reputations and careers. except the like of cal ripken, etc.
only bought joe/tf and some obscure small line comics back then to so but you end up with boxes of junk to get those which i'm stuck with. at some point i'll just toss those in the recycling bin. never got into pog, magic or the other junk thankfully. still don't buy toys for investment, just to risky.

The only toy I have "for investment" is a Jakks Brian Pillman figure which was released shortly before his death. I actually have two of this figure -- one is open and the other is carded. Honestly, I did this more to pay honor to Pillman (of whom I remain a huge fan) moreso than any potential monetary gain. But technically it was an investment purchase.

Gotta agree with the writer of that article: POGs were a giant WTF even back then. They also came and went so fast that I never even realized they got off the ground. I thought they were something that got "pushed" but didn't catch on. I do, however, remember the days when first-edition sets of Magic: The Gathering were going for thousands of dollars (Black Lotus, anyone?)
Anyway, articles like these make me glad I've always been a "collect for enjoyment" vs. "collect for value" collector. I wonder how many things came and went in the past decade that could have had the same success (though fleeting) as all of the things mentioned in the article, but failed to launch due to a lack of supporting economic and social factors. |

I think I still have a lot of the Chevron Cars packed away somewhere. They might have gotten sold at a garage sale several years ago, I don't remember. I wonder if they have any value?

I have like a weakness for quality McDonald Happy Meal toys. LOL. I remember when McDs had those little plush Cats & Dogs & later NeoPets toys... all I did for an entire month was eat Happy Meals. LOL.
Wow. You were still collecting cards that late? I started in '86 and stopped in '92 I think. I had a mint '86 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card... but someone stole it.

I have a Jakks Blue Blazer and he was worth more when I bought it than he is now. Turns out wrestling collectors care more about articulation and state of the art head sculpts than the rarity of a figure. |

Heh, Yeah that brings back memories.
Magic-Played it once and had enough, I do remember people stumbling over Black Lotus though. 90's comics-I never went overboard, but I bought extras of certain titles and events (Even had three copies of the first app of Deadpool that I ended up selling off for some good cash later), but mostly I donated a bunch to my Local Comic shop to put in the cheapo bin. X-Men #1, X-Force, ect. Most of the earliest (Ghost Rider #1, Valiants, ect) extras I had from that era I sold off early and ended up with some cool amounts of cash, HA I beat it. Comic trading cards-Yep, that one got me, still trying to get rid of a few, but I know people who went further. Pogs-Wow I remember those, I ended up somehow getting a few Star Wars ones, but that was it, I know I didn't pay for them but I have no clue how I got them. Star Wars-I remember guys fighting over the green or red backgrounds and long or short sabres, thankfully I only was conserned with the figs themselves and never got sucked in as bad, but I did end up getting rid of those LOL. They should have added marvel figs from Toybiz, I remember when Rouge went for $40 right out of the case (and I remember guys grabbing them left and right with that retirement idea) Saw her for $1 at a yard sale yesterday LOL. |
