I'm part of a group sponsoring a family for Christmas. My item category is any kind of toy gift for a 12 year old boy. Other people were given clothing items and reading items as their category, so he's covered there. My dollar range I was given was $20, but I can go more. It's just a guideline.
Now, I know what I liked as a 12 year old, but I was and still am a big nerd into Transformers, GI Joe, Star Wars, and anime. What would be a good toy/game item that most average 12 year old boys would enjoy? I think video games are out since I know nothing of their family situation. I will assume the worst and say they don't have any game systems etc. I was thinking something like a cool Nerf gun, but I was thinking maybe 12 year olds would be getting out of the Nerf thing. I know I would like it, but I'm trying to put myself in his shoes and want to get something he might like. My cop out would be to get a gift card, but that's no fun. Edit: Here are the pics of each item in question. Remember he's got clothing covered (even socks and underwear) by other people in my group. This is purely a fun, nice to have, item. Preteen is a tough age. For most of us, that's the point we decided to embrace the nerd/geek title. With no real knowledge of what the kid's into, choosing a toy that suits him can be difficult. I started building hi end model kits at that age, personally.

i wouldn't get a toy, boys stop liking toys at that age, and then start back up in their late 20's

Maybe I can go the collectible route and get him something he might want to keep MOC/MIB. Then again, do I really want to start him down a path of collecting.
Since he's got clothes covered by other people, I suppose I can try to get him something fun, but not a toy per se. |

Having said all that, if he's into sports you can't go wrong with a Jr. size football, or something from Nerf. I think if you get him a Transformer he's probably gonna think you suck...just what I get from the 12 yr olds in my family these days. Is he a smart kid?? How bout a chess set? |

yeah, i really don't know sharky, that's tough, do you know this kid personallly?
i did this few years ago at my local police station, my ma works there, and i sent in a few moc joes, they were to be given to a 12 year old after i handed em in, when my ma told me, i was like um, nah, you can't give a 12 year old joes, and for some reason the ma came in the police staion crying that the younger brother didn't get nothing or something, so i was like give the younger kid the joes and hopefully it will spark the interest gi joe, and someone else can help out the older boy with something more maturer. i didn't wanna see no kid left out, and my toys not go to good use. i have no ideas for you, i keep thinking cologne, but then again, he might not be into smelling good yet. you have to keep it primarily cheap, so a bike and that kind'a shit's out the question. |

The hard part is I know nothing other than he's 12. Is it possible to get a decent watch like a Timex for $20-$30.
I am still leaning toward the Nerf thing. Even if it's not his cup of tea, who doesn't enjoy shooting stuff around the house from time to time. BTW, I do appreciate the effort and ideas. It is a tough thing since he's in that awkward age of a pre-teen. Not quite a kid and not quite a teenager yet. That's why I decided to post and ask for ideas. |
