Does anyone know if AFA owns an X-Ray machine? If so, when did they acquire and begin using it?
The prices on these machines have really come down over the past couple of years and this is something that I have wondered for some time, but never got a straight answer. Someone recently mentioned an AFA graded USS FLAGG and stated that it could just be full of phone books. I mean, that is unlikely, but if someone had an unopened one, weighed it, and then just packed a box so that the weight matched and was a magician with some vintage tape, a little bit of bleach and knew the tricks to making something look "aged", it could be done. The recent post where a member X-rayed his unopened box of 1992 Gi Joes triggered this forgotten question in my mind. I am not one to tell people how to spend their money, but I stopped getting my items "professionally graded" 2 years ago for various reasons. Anyone care to shine some light on this with some actual information and non-spam comments? X-Ray in action I have seen in person. Portable x-ray system used to x-ray suspicious box - YouTube

Hi Joorde, thanks for the response, Well, to play the devil's advocate here, if it was really prohibitive why does almost every Chiropractor and dentist own one?
I do see your point, I am mainly referring to the digital Xrays that EOD uses for suspicious packages/bomb scares. I am also not advocating that they Xray every box coming through their doors, like boxes that are valued under, say, $200. But when it comes to a USS FLAGG, WHALE, SNAKE MOUNTAIN and so on - I think an X-ray is necessary. Do you know of any companies or agencies that lease their X-ray services outside of the medical field? I wonder if one could hire an off-duty EOD officer for a fee or contract for "training purposes".

It would be much easier to weigh the box & verify it matches the exspected weight. & That the rocks inside at not rattling around.
In the 90s there was a lot of Star Wars MIB items that litterly had rocks in the box. So that's why I never got the mib fever. As far as AFA grading, It basically $20 to verify a box is not broken. This sometimes increases the cost passing the selling point. (POTF2 MOC) The grading also only refers to the condition of the item when it was graded, so if its been two years, who knows what has happened to it since. I doubt anyone doing AFA grading is actually using an X ray machine. As Joorde said there are a lot of regulations involved keeping it out of the hands of would be toy graders. |

10 years from now, I wonder how many people paid 10,000 dollars for a USS FLAGG BOX full of phonebooks.
I understand MOC where you have clear bubbles, but MISB just makes no sense to me anymore, so I stopped collecting AFA and MISB years ago.

I don't understand collecting boxed items either. If you buy a sealed Flagg just for the sake of having it, then I suppose it would never bother you to know there were phonebooks in it. Obviously someone wouldn't be opening it anyway, so I guess they'd never know.
