Haha, if he threw them away to be more adult, he deserves the lesson. I gave my entire collection away at 13 or 14, and have rued it since. And it makes me value my modern collection in a way that I might not have, had I not lost it first!

Either my parents, or I threw away a lot of my old toys back in the early 90s because I was in that 'too old for toys' phase, where video games took over my thoughts.
Used to have a lot of TMNT, M.A.S.K., Transformers, and other stuff... I didn't get back into toys again until the late 90s when I discovered Transformers Beast Wars, which as of now are my oldest toys in my collection. SO wish I still had the older toys...and knew if I threw them away myself or not as it bugs me to this day... |

That is soooo sad. Anything I end up with that can't be traded or used I give away for my friends' kids. If that does not work out then I donate it to the Goodwill.
It would be a better lesson for parents' to make their children donate the toys as punishment.

I always thought that my sister should pretend to throw them away, and put them away for years and years, and give them all back when he is old enough to leave the house.

My wife would threaten to throw toys away on my son when he was 3. After I saw the negative reaction that had on my son I would never do that to my child. I feel it is an act of control not parenting. Every situation is different and I will not judge, but I personally will never take toys away from my son. P.S. I am now divorced from her because of this and many other reasons. |

Also might teach kids that all possessions are disposable, in the throwaway culture we already are.
My folks told us that if we intentionally broke our toys, we wouldn't get anymore. We saved a lot of stuff...too much. The opposite of having your toys sold or tossed is having boxes and boxes of stuff you can't bear to part with for nostalgic reasons. |

I think this is a terrible punishment and will only led to more animosity from the child toward the parent. Timeout works much better. If the child is too old for timeout, then take the toys away for a given period of time, then they get them back. Or better yet allow the child to earn things for good behavior. Then they are only losing what they already don’t have, but want. In any case I would only use the timeout as a last resort for terrible behavior.

Being a man who has unsuccessfully tried to have children for the last decade or so, it is a shame to watch those who have them, treat them as though they are less than dirt. |
