Just saw this article and thought it was interesting...
10 Collecting Fads Worth Next To Nothing Now - Topless Robot ...mostly because I collected a bunch of those crap. Haha. I am lucky that I never collected POGs though, even though a lot of people did... I just thought they were stupid (the people, not POGS... no wait... POGS too, lol). And luckily I never got into Magic The Gathering either... if I wanted to play with cards I would play UNO. I did collect Baseball Cards and 90's comics though... oh well. At least it kept me out of trouble.

Gotta agree with the writer of that article: POGs were a giant WTF even back then. They also came and went so fast that I never even realized they got off the ground. I thought they were something that got "pushed" but didn't catch on. I do, however, remember the days when first-edition sets of Magic: The Gathering were going for thousands of dollars (Black Lotus, anyone?)
Anyway, articles like these make me glad I've always been a "collect for enjoyment" vs. "collect for value" collector. |

I spent every dime I got my hands on on baseball cards between 1993 and 1998. It was the biggest waste of money ever. I would get my 2 week pay check from work (approx $225) cash it and I would go home with a handful of cards instead. I had no control.
If I had spent that same money on Joes, I would have a sick collection worth 5 times what i paid for it in those years. Now all my cards sit in boxes in a closet. Out of nostalgia I bought 4 boxes of my favorite cards sealed from 1993 for $40 last month. Back in the day those boxes wouldve been over $100 a piece. |

Also, I have a buddy who has a whiole collection of first and second series Magic cards. Sealed boxes, rare graded cards, etc. He claims they are worth big money within the right market.

Well, I agree with the article about the worthlessness from a monetary standpoint, but that stuff still has a lot of value from a collecting standpoint. A lot of that stuff has inherent fun factor as well.
Of course, you can't sell "I had fun collecting them!" or "I loved reading these comics!" to put a kid through college!

I agree with that. I know my baseballs cards arent worth much these days, but I am not going to toss them out. I dont even look at them much but when I do, it takes me back to the good old days of busting packs. Thats why I bought those boxes, it brings me back to the days of scrounging together 2 and half bucks just to ride my bike a mile to the grocery store and pick up a pack of cards. Those were great days.

I did have fun collecting 90s comics. Don't think I went overboard, but there are a few I bought multiples of just because I was hoping to support the line. Plus early Gen13 is still worth something. Take that, topless! lol.

I never collected very much of any of that stuff. Sure, I dabbled a little in sports cards, comics, etc, but it never felt right to me, so I stopped. Heck, even stuff I really liked back in the day sometimes doesn't do it for me anymore and I question why I ever bought it in the first place. It's probably why I was never much of a completest.
