The big suprise is that alot of us have hot girls or are married.
Alot of toy geeks and geeks in general be they game or comic or toy or computer geeks, could break that image society has placed in womens minds by doing a few simple things: 1. Shower! 2. Care about your facial hair. In fact, care about all your hair! 3. Care about the way you look. 4. Show some manners. When you eat, when you speak. Always. 5. Care about the way you smell. 6. Never ever wear shorts with a button up silk anime shirt and flip flops of some sort. NEVER. Any others I forgot? Do you drive a really nice car? A girl might want you because of it. Do you play quarterback? A girl might want you because of it. Do you collect toys? A girl might want you... in spite of it.

I agree 100%. There is a huge difference and we are considered Geeks. We know we all don't fit into one category but society says different.
Lets compare the two; THE SPORTS FAN: Usually someone who played in that particular sport or their father / big brother / relative did and now they follow it religiously. THE TOY COLLECTOR: Usually collected this toy growing up and did not really play a sport. THE SPORTS FAN: has his memorabilia in a sports store, men's section of a department store and in the sports section. THE TOY COLLECTOR: has his memorabilia in Toys-R-Us, the toy isle and or a comic shop. THE SPORTS FAN: has his fix played yearly on TV and has major events accompanying these sports. Superbowl, World Series. THE TOY COLLECTOR: has his fix by going to Comic Conventions where they drop Toys from the ceiling. Or on books accompanied with pictures. (Comic Books, etc.) THE SPORTS FAN: Wearing a jersey that has a million dollar (usually) physically fit player. THE TOY COLLECTOR: Wearing a shirt with a cartoon character on it. THE SPORTS FAN: Has commercials that tell us that Girls love guys who love sports. Girls for the most part buy into this. THE TOY COLLECTOR: Are parodied as being geeks and could not get a girl. Girls for the most part buy into this as well. I would pretty much say that those (and I could go on) are indications that Sports and Collecting Toys are vastly different. Anyone who really thinks that this is not the case is in denial. Mr. Savage |

Everyone geeks out on something. Remember beenie-babies? I remember seeing grandmothers almost get into fist fights over those things! And all of that over simply "collecting" them. There was no nostalgia, no reliving their childhood, it was simply the thrill of the hunt.
I was a football player in high school. I still love watching football even though I don't still play. I loved playing "guns" with all the neighborhood kids and pretending I was John Matrix from Commando. I grew up and joined the military. I was a total movie buff as a kid. I'm now an actor and film producer. I used to love burning ants with a magnifying glass. Now I'm an entomologist and I get paid to kill bugs. I loved collecting and playing with G.I.Joes as a kid. I loved the thrill of turning the corner of the action figure aisle and seeing a bunch of new figures that I don't have waiting for me (still do)! This is the way I live my life. Be it geeky or not. |

If people really get pleasure from calling me a 'geek' then that's their inexplicable business, but when they use it in a mean spirited, derogatory way they have to put up or shut up. I've been called a nerd by people strutting round in soccer shirts and I just laugh at their hypocrisy.

the only thing I'd add to the discussion on the coolness of different types of collectors is that it's a bit more complex because i don't think they are mutually exclusive. Probably the "toy geekiest" line I collect is TF:Animated, but I also played sports for years, collect McFarlanes (and over at spawn.com, there's a bit more machismo) and other Sports memorabilia.
All I'm saying is, the line between "geeky" collector and "cool" collector isn't always distinct and may have more to do with the person than the collection.

That's sad but unfortunately nowadays true? ! People wanna charge as much as humanly possible but heaven forbid you wanna know if the screws are rusty? Luckily I bought all mine when manners still existed and asking questions wasn't an issue nor did I have trouble with people answering. Nowadays wow totally different story

Man this thread is all over the place. How about just be a decent human being. If you are a decent honest person chances are that it will carry over into what ever you do. But be realistic about life. Just because you are a good person doesn't mean everyone else is so don't expect them to be. You be you and let them be, that's it.
