Amberbratt, I'm just a night person.
My point about the geek stuff is to say I think collectors should be nice to each other and not act like they are better than some people. Ours is not a hobby that is regarded positively by our society, or so it seems to me. People who collect sports-related stuff are treated as normal, while action figure collectors are treated as freaks who won't grow up. I'm not saying that's right, but that appears to be the way it is. So, if you are a collector, you are in the same boat with everybody else who is a collector. To me, we're really not that much different, so it seems wrong for some collectors to act like they're better than others. I think some of you showed how sensitive you are to the way people view your collecting by jumping up and saying "I am NOT a geek!" You may not think so, but to me, anyone who is an action figure collector is a geek. It's like being pregnant, you either are or you aren't. You don't have to agree with me. But I think an action figure collector who does not acknowledge his/her geekness is in denial. My purpose in writing this was to share my own personal collecting philosophy and to open a forum for other people to share theirs. I don't expect people to adhere to what I believe, by any means. We all come at this from different perspectives. I'm curious, though. Those of you who stated basically that you have no collecting ethics, do you steal toys in ways like I described (figure-switching?). If you don't, I challenge you that you do have SOME ethics. Because for someone with no collecting ethics, there would be absolutely no reason not to do this because you'd never get caught and get free toys. For every collector I know and have known, how they collected was an extension of their basic personality. |

Cool, thanks for clarifying and I can appreciate where you are coming from with most of what you wrote once again.

So is anybody who collects anything a "geek" (comics, stamps, antiques, sports memorabilia), or is it just us 'geeks' ?
I don't know... I spend years trying to convince non-fans that my interest in toys and sci-fi is as valid as them screaming at the local football (sorry, "soccer") team every weekend only to have someone say this and set me back by decades. Quote:

I think this should be posted above every Toy isle/Store in the country. I'm so glad someone put it like this. There are so many more facets to someone other than their hobby. All collectors, even those who use it as a source of income should learn to relax. There are folks who text each other and go in droves and start teams and so forth. I mean now guys have their girlfriends getting stuff for them. Which I find contemptible. If you can't get there then tuff sh7t! Oh and Barefoot Jedi Geek? Me? well perhaps but I think there are levels, so its not as sure as pregnancy. I mean some folks are like did you get the such and such, with the blah blah stamped on it, dated 1990-blah? . . . Oh yeah I did, all three versions, the last one I got on ebay it was only two hundred incl. shipping. (That afformentioned scenario is not, nor has it ever been, and never shall be me . . . ever!) So there are many levels of Geekness I think. I buy what I like, not what may be worth money or what some jerk says is the shit. I also have to complete a line unfortunately, not every version but at least one of each. Do I do some unethical things like scalp or hoard, a bit, but primarily to use the money to buy more toys. Like for example I saw a few Duke Redstar two packs today, but I left them. Why because I already own them. Could I buy them and sell them, yes but I'd rather not. However this guys girlfriend bought both of them. Did it irk me, not because I missed out, but because this douche sends his girlfriend to do his job, I think its a bit pathetic. I collect six different lines, . . it isn't cheap. I don't have $1200 in disposable income sitting around I have other priorities. I will get my toys and I will get them cheaply if I can. I don't blame you one bit for trying to have some dignity and honor in this hobby...it's brutal - you just have to hope that people are willing to make it a two-way street. Nice post.

Yeah man, I hear ya...I just recently bought my Shipwreck and Cobra Air Trooper at the sales on brianstoys.com and toywiz.com...I even have a list of which characters I want and I price hunt...I have a 2 month old and diapers and formula come first...I'll probably never find some of the rarer figures on the shelves in a retail store because of the hoarders and scalpers. Great post - especially the end.

It's just us, man. Football will always be "cool", collecting toys will always be "geeky". Not much to be done about it.
