I am not lauding this next toyline on it's figures, but it's uber-awesome vehicles. Steel Monsters by Tonka! Now they had a great rep for mean tough trucks in the 70s, but in the 80s, they released this "Road Warrior" inspired post-apocalyptic line! (Actually, looking at them now on the 3 3/4 archives makes me think the figures actually had some cool looking characters.)
Steel Monsters I had the Bomber and the Masher. Of course, they both went on to become Dreadnok vehicles almost immediately. Quote:
Yeah, that's kinda what I meant to say but it didn't come out quite clearly: That Adventure People started the 3 3/4" revolution before Star Wars came along.
Either way, I can't help but wonder how awesome a modern Adventure People line would be. I'm sure a lot of Joe fans would love having the "civilian" figures to choose from, but even in and of themselves the line could be a lot of fun. Damn shame it's Mattel and not Hasbro that owns Fisher-Price. Mattel can't seem to make good 3 3/4" figures to save their lives. And yeah, a modern Adventure People line would be fantastic. |

I never had but two or three of the figures from the line, but even with having only those couple of figures I always get misty-eyed-nostalgic thinking about the Super Powers collection by Mattel.

Actually they were by Kenner. And I wouldn't call Super Powers a second rate toy line. Easily one of the greatest lines of the 80s, if not all time. It was the first time we got figures of Green Lantern, Flash, Hawkman, Brainiac, Martian Manhunter, Darkseid, and many others.

A) Sorry for getting the manufacturer wrong; you're right, it was Kenner, not Mattel. I should have just left the producer out of my comment entirely. B) I mentioned them because someone on here had said "is 2nd Rate anything that wasn't Star Wars, G.I.Joe, He-Man MOTUC, and TMNT?" Since Super Powers Collection wasn't listed I figured that would put them in the 2nd Rate category, along with Ghostbusters (which I would have thought could fall into the '1st Rate' category).

I always wondered what Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors toys were like - We got the cartoon here, but not the toy line.
For me it was "Action Jack" figures... cheap polythene, gaudy colours and low QC yet there was something about them I loved. Being cheap made it easy for me to amass dozens of them, and despite the lack of back story I sorted them into factions for some extensive play. Definately good ratio of 'cost to fun'

Centuarions were ridiculously awesome...I mean nothing about them didn't kick ass. Except that after 25 yrs I recently broke an arm off one of mine...that sucks.
Captain Power was pretty damn cool but man did that die down fast......remember that other thing you shot the TV with? Action Max?? My friend had that, I remember it being fun. No mention of Rock Lords? Whaaaaaaaat?! |
