It was pretty good. I liked the old school feel to it, but I think it would have worked better with dialogue. I was a little confused as to why a massive Revanche base would be abandoned. And is it really “silent” when words on blueprints and in notebooks are needed to understand what’s going on?

So... the biggest complaint I have was that the storytelling is already successful by it's own merit and the little notes to help the reader were weaknesses instead of strengths. That said I really enjoyed this a lot. It worked very well, the pacing was good, and the mystery reveal process was great. It ties in with ARAH modern lore, the first of the three specials to attempt this. And I could easily see this lead to a whole different plotline in the comic. Larry could literally pick up the leads from this story and run with it in the current comic, so it feels important to the overall plotline. I have a few confusions such as... if male then why are there cubs? If cubs then how long has the facility been closed? Are they kidnapped? Would a male provide food for cubs? How does this thing eat? If those are the biggest potholes I can come up with then it's pretty good. Oh and I've never seen Freedom treated like a character in this manner before. He was emoting nonstop. It was kinda weird but I was fine with it. I liked the dog food.

I thought the story was fine enough, but I also felt there was a missed opportunity. Instead of using that generic robot, they should’ve used the new classified snake armor; since the plant was abandoned, they could’ve had it just be automated instead of controlled by a pilot inside.

I really, really liked the art. Layout, drawings, colors, all good. The story was good, too.
SPOILER: The ending with the animals was great. Having the Joes arrive in helicopters was nice, but a missed opportunity. I always want to see specific Joes doing their jobs. Joes they could have shown at the end: Dr. Link Talbot - the Joes' veterinarian to help all the animals https://www.yojoe.com/action/04/drlinktalbot.shtml Gears - This guy should be the Joes' brainpower involving the Revanche tech https://www.yojoe.com/action/94/gears.shtml Doc (Carla Greer) - Spirit was hurt. Bringing in a doctor to treat Spirit makes sense. Each of these three could have been seen in the background of one panel on the last page and it would have made fanboys like me really, really happy. |

But even if this is the female it raises the question of how old the cubs are and how long this place has been shut down. Besides it seems unlikely this monstrosity could have born and birthed babies. I'm leaning towards "kidnapped" since that solves all the timeline and logistical problems. Also obviously this critter is dragging a lot of animals back here as well, so it would keep it's own kind alive. Makes a lot of sense now.

That Spirit is one tough dude. Punched right through a concrete wall and all he suffers from is a dislocated shoulder? Most people would have been splattered. Spirit just takes a short nap, pops his shoulder back, and is on the hunt again.
I finally watched the Peacemaker HBO series last month, and all I could think of watching Freedom was "go, go, Eagly!" That is one smart, tough, bird. The kind of bird you would expect to give you a hug at the end of the mission. Still a fun issue. I might have tossed Spirit through some shelving rather than a concrete wall and maybe gone 50 percent less "Shipwreck and Polly" to better fit ARAH, but things are still alright. |
