Is she blindfolded and silent or just silent?
I'd guess the concept of a silent issue serves as a good reminder that the art should tell the story as effectively as the script. Hopefully it did that well.

Are all the issues of Silent Missions going to be "#1" because they're considered character one-shots? If so, that's dumb.
For me, this Jinx issue is decidedly better than the Beach-Head issue, if only because the storyline actually has some purpose for needing to be silent. (Though we do once again have a little bit of heavy automatic weapons fire that would definitely not be silent.) While the artwork is a little too "cartoony" for my liking (ironic considering it's a comic book, I know), the panels are laid out more coherently to follow the action. That's another improvement over the confusing clutter of the Beach-Head issue. On the other hand, the story itself is extremely slight. Unlike the original Silent Interlude, it doesn't introduce anything new to the G.I. Joe mythology and doesn't really feel like it accomplishes anything or needed to be told. The whole thing is also reliant on that old cliche of the bomb with a ticking countdown timer. And Jinx sure does seem to cover a lot of ground and get a lot done in just 20 seconds, which is kind of absurd. |

What I liked about the Beach-Head issue was the great detail included in the panels that filled in the gaps. The kids were orphans, parent had been in medical field, etc.) I assumed that this took place in an area where they didn't speak English, so silent made sense to me. I agree with you that the Jinx issue had a few problems: 1. The countdown was too fast. I know she is a ninja, but some of those pages would require at least a couple seconds. I would have preferred at least 30 seconds, where some of the pages that needed at least a couple seconds could have had two numbers showing at the top (18...17...). 2. There was nothing added to Jinx or to the story. I know that Larry probably requested a return to status quo at the end of each of these one-shots, but this just seemed kind of pointless. She blew up a Night Raven and killed some CGs and a Night Creeper. 3. The art was OK. Not as good as the Beach head issue, but OK. |

Art was pretty terrible.
Remember when comic book art used to be really awesome and detailed, and not just look like something you'd scribble in a notrbook during 8th grade study hall? |

And I agree with Josh's comment above. If a silent issue doesn't introduce something new, then I'm not sure if there's much point to it. I think that's why #21 is such a classic and everything since then pales in comparison. |

However, I could follow what was happening in each panel without having to re-read the page three times, sitting and staring at most of the panels absolutely baffled at what I'm supposed to be looking at - which is how I felt reading Beach-Head. Seriously, WTF is going on in this page? ![]() Okay, I sort-of understand the upside-down bodies in the first part, because the previous page showed a bunch of people falling out of a helicopter. How any of them survived a head-first plummet from a thousand feet in the air onto cement is a mystery we'll just have to shrug off. But then on the left side we've got tiny images of the Cobra charging toward Beach-Head that look like those little stickers we'd used to put on our homework folders back in the day, randomly slapped into the corner. That's followed by some mysterious ninja (never shown before or after) punching both Beach-Head and a Cobra so hard they flip through the air. Maybe? I honestly have no clue what any of this is supposed to be. And why is there a big white cut-out over most of the ninja's body? What the heck is that? To me, this is terrible art. I hate it so much. Woof, yeah that's BAD.
Terrible job of conveying the action. That's supposed to be Beach Head getting punched in silhouette there, not a ninja. It's awful. Phil Hester, right? He did the Kevin Smith Green Arrow comics. I thought his stuff sucked then...it's only gotten worse. |

Yes, the art told the story for the most part. Not sure about the part where she appeared to be knocked out for only one second…
