I take Slices Customs opinions with a fucking mountain of sodium chloride.
I expressed my opinion. Free speech and all that crap, you Americans love to harp on about. For whatever reason, I associate 'veteran' with 'combat veteran'. I am not denigrating anyone who has served in the armed forces of any nation. |

The term veteran in the UK has typically had connotations of an old man who served in WWII. We would probably use the generic term "ex-forces" more in day to day speech. If using the veteran tag, then usually someone would preface the relevant conflict they fought in, eg Falklands veteran, Gulf War veteran, etc. |

My fellow 'Tankers, this is a warning for everyone. Please stop with the personal attacks, digs, back-handed comments and insults at each other. We don't expect everyone to always get along, but the insults and taking pot shots at each other is totally unnecessary. Count to 10, walk away from the computer or phone, logoff the site, go outside, take a walk, anything. But please stop. You've been warned.
also... Please remember to not make any potentially politically-charged posts as well. It is against forum rules. Think before posting what you have typed. Re-read your posts before posting. This is a warning to STOP. If it continues, individual warnings and/or infractions will start being passed out and the thread will be closed. Use common sense please. POLITICS OR ANY TYPE OF POLITICAL POSTS OF ANY KIND ARE NOT ALLOWED ON THE FORUMS. THIS CAN NOT BE STATED ENOUGH.

Regarding veterans, anyone who served in the past is a veteran, regardless if they ever saw any combat or not. My GF works for the VA and it's a total slap in the face and disrespectful to those who have served to suggest someone who never saw combat is somehow not a veteran. There are decades in history where most active military men never saw combat. They're still veterans.
This can be found online: "A veteran is a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service and was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable: Active duty: Includes full-time duty in the Armed Forces, as well as service as a cadet in the Military, Coast Guard, or Air Force Academy, or as a midshipman at the Naval Academy Discharge: Must be under conditions other than dishonorable A common misconception is that only those who have served in combat or retired from active duty can be called veterans."

I think it's just a nuance of language between us in the UK, and you in the US, and not meant to offend.
As a fellow Brit. I would agree with you. Veteran has a different meaning over here. I?ve always admired the way the US responds to its veterans.
