For whatever reason, I associate 'veteran' with 'combat veteran'. I am not denigrating anyone who has served in the armed forces of any nation.

I think it's just a nuance of language between us in the UK, and you in the US, and not meant to offend.

The term veteran in the UK has typically had connotations of an old man who served in WWII. We would probably use the generic term "ex-forces" more in day to day speech.

If using the veteran tag, then usually someone would preface the relevant conflict they fought in, eg Falklands veteran, Gulf War veteran, etc.

Regarding veterans, anyone who served in the past is a veteran, regardless if they ever saw any combat or not. My GF works for the VA and it's a total slap in the face and disrespectful to those who have served to suggest someone who never saw combat is somehow not a veteran. There are decades in history where most active military men never saw combat. They're still veterans.

"A veteran is a person who served in the active military, naval, air, or space service and was discharged under conditions other than dishonorable:

Active duty: Includes full-time duty in the Armed Forces, as well as service as a cadet in the Military, Coast Guard, or Air Force Academy, or as a midshipman at the Naval Academy

Discharge: Must be under conditions other than dishonorable

A common misconception is that only those who have served in combat or retired from active duty can be called veterans."

As a fellow Brit. I would agree with you. Veteran has a different meaning over here.
I?ve always admired the way the US responds to its veterans.
