For me it's #21 to the mid-50's or so. Still some gems later like the Snake Eyes Trilogy or #85, the second silent issue. But for the most part it started to fall apart with Mindbender and Serpentor.
But yeah, 1984 to around 1986 was some of the best comics Marvel ever put out. |

I haven't been able to read most of the IDW continuation (most of it was out of print by the time I got to it) but what I have read, I have liked. The first couple of issues are a little slow and you can tell that the series is still trying to find its feet again, but once things get going it is pretty good! Definitely going to get more volumes when/if Skybound reprints it.
I tried getting into DDP but I just couldn't get past the first few issues. I just didn't connect with it.

I have been a huge Hama fan and defender. However, at this point, I kind of wish he would had over the reigns to someone new. Take his universe and canon - and ramp up into modern-era scripting and plotting. I get tired of the 'I never know what's going to happen until I write the next page' mentality. That's not writing - that's just winging it.
I don't want reboots or alternate universes - but I'd love to have a continuation done in the proper way. DDP did a decent job at this. Brandon Jerwa especially. I liked his stuff better than Blaylock. Blaylock was too busy trying to make the company work - and GIJoe faltered for it. (as it is right now, I just get every Hama issue - browse the art a bit - then it goes into the filing system and packed away. They aren't very readable... but I can't come to the point of NOT buying it) |

Part of the problem is that he's writing ARAH in the same verbose style as he did in the 80s, in order to maintain consistency, I suppose. He over explains everything for the sake of educating the readers, the latter of which are now mostly middle-aged men.
The stuff he wrote for DDP and for the IDW-verse had a slightly more sophisticated tone. He can write ARAH this way if he wanted to. It's to bad he doesn't. Last edited by AWOL; 05-18-2024 at 11:08 AM.. |

I love the way Hama writes and I think ARAH would be weird if it were written in any other way.
I agree that issues 21-50 are arguably the best, but I think a lot of that has to do with our nostalgia for that time and the art teams more than the storyline. I think if Skybound were to have Whigham pencil and an inker mimic Mushynsky’s style, we just might get that same vibe again. Personally, I’m enjoying ARAH more now than I have since the 80’s and I attribute that to the art team more than anything else. |

I first got into the brand when DDP were publishing their "Union of the Snake" storyline, so I have a lot of nostalgia for their run. Loved it at the time, but looking back on it now, a lot of the issues were rushed and messy, particularly the stuff by Josh Blaylock.
Loved Brandon Jerwa's run though, and the World War III storyline. Some really great ideas in there. DDP were much better at taking the characters to interesting new places, where as Hama is much more about maintaining the status quo. I wish he'd do more impactful stories, but we haven't really had a "big" event since the Cobra Civil War. The Return of Serpentor arc remains one of my favourite Joe stories as well; was so exciting at the time to see a full on Cobra Commander Vs Serpentor fight. |
