I think Duke and Cobra Commander are running concurrently and will have their endings line up. In Duke #4, Destro's techs are complaining that their existing fuel sources aren't adequate to power the latest MARS equipment and they need to find a new one, which suggests to me that it would have to take place before Destro met with Cobra Commander and gained access to Energon.

That wasn't a mystery character, it was Mercer asking for permission to kill Duke. (Plus, no way Cobra Commander ever refers to Destro as boss.)

You're right. That's me having a Mandela effect moment. I will note when Duke meets Burkhart one of the people in the gathering refers to Cobra-La so I still believe CC is set during that six-month time window from Duek #1.

Another great issue. How come Cobra Commander is so resistant though. Taking this beating from NE was crazy. I think the scientist is Mindbender who still has hair. Looks like him and kinda speaks like him too ("in the darkness, I cracked the code"). Only nitpick is that Zandar looks like Archie Andrews lolllllllllll

IDK, I kinda like the silent Nemesis Enforcer/Immortal, so maybe this injury is how he loses his voice.
Either way, this was great. |

I'm not a big fan of the art they've been using. It feels like comic art, in general, has been severely dumbed down in the past 20 years. These days, it seems ANYONE could be a comic artist.

I know I like this art of Nemesis Enforcer a lot more than the last time he appeared in a Joe comic... |

I'm good with the art. I wouldn't call it the best art I've ever seen in a comic book or even the best art I've ever seen in a Joe comic book, but I do think it suits the story pretty well. Idk. I guess I'm pretty desensitized to bad comic art after surviving Kelly Jones's work on the regular Batman titles (though I thought it worked pretty well in something like Batman vs Dracula).
I can't get over how much I've enjoyed this portrayal of Cobra Commander so far. I can definitely hear Latta's voice in my head when I'm reading the issues, so it's like this characterization is basically fixing most of the common criticisms levied towards Toon CC. He's a sneaky, manipulative sumbitch, but he's standing his ground. One of my favorite portrayals of The Commander in any media was what we saw in the Devil's Due return of Serpentor arc. He's not running around being some super badass snapping necks and throwing people around. He picks his shots, uses every advantage at his disposal, forms temporary alliances as they suit him and abandons them the second they don't. And he winds up reclaiming his organization, putting his would-be usurpers in their place, and gloriously opening up a can of whoop-ass on a man willing to walk around dressed up as a snake. Great stuff. And that's what I feel like I'm getting with this CC. He's just heavier on the Sunbow and lighter on the Marvel, and that's super cool. Wonder if he'll get a set of battle armor now that NE snatched his faceplate? I'm not sure if I'll go all-in with the Energon-verse just yet. We'll see how this wraps up. But, regardless, this is easily up there with my favorite Joe sagas.
