Greetings,
The insert pages for my epic binding project of ARAH are almost done. They will be off to a local printer shortly, then placed where they go in the old (very-rearranged) G.I. Joe Classic TPBs before being shipped to the binder. I said I was just going to keep it simple and use the existing trades. I changed my mind (again). I came up with the best revised chronological reading/binding order I could using the dates, events, and notes provided within the narrative, some outside research (GenFlagg at Option38 especially), input from this board, and my own best judgment. I'll post it here for comment later tonight, but, barring any major errors, I'm putting in one more night of work on this before I collapse into a heap of loose comic pages, scraps of camo, and discarded action figure limbs. Stand by to stand by. Also, all gratitude and no disrespect intended to the author(s) of the existing reading order posted on the thread. That was the basis for this update, obviously, and I couldn't have done it without that as a starting point. My own isn't meant to be the final word on the subject. If anyone deserves personal kudos for that work, I'm ready to give them. Last edited by nightwrite; 05-05-2021 at 12:57 PM.. Reason: Oversight |

Nice man. Be sure to share pictures.
Are you using the Hasbro 1/2 issues?

*EDITS MADE TO VOLUMES 1 and 10 AS OF 28 February 2024. VOLUME 11 ADDED. THANKS TO OPTION38.COM and HISSTANK USER J JAMES FOR CORRECTIONS. ONE CLARIFICATION: FLASHBACKS THAT OCCUR IN-STORY WITH A CHARACTER REMEMBERING ARE LEFT IN PUBLICATION ORDER. FLASHBACKS THAT OCCUR WHOLLY IN SEQUENCE HAVE BEEN PLACED APPROPRIATELY. ONE EXCEPTION MADE FOR ARAH 253.*
Here is my binding/reading order. Your mileage may vary. Thank you to everyone for their input, and thank you to whomever assembled the first reading order. Also the website Yojoe.com and Option 38 were both enormously helpful. Special Mission issues are grouped at the end of volumes except where they directly crossover. Going by the months they actually came out alongside ARAH just creates a disjointed reading experience. My notes and explanations in [brackets]. This is meant as either a binding map or a reading order. Feel free to use, criticize, or praise fulsomely if you like it. If these seem fat, it's because they're mostly coming from TPBs, which means no advertisements, except where they're unavoidable (25A issues, looking at you). Action Stars 1-3 (cereal insert; author unknown; canonicity unlikely) G.I. Joe in 3-D 1-6, Annual (different publisher; canonicity unlikely; seems logical that a reader would assume it was the same Joes, give then era, but this barely qualifies) Battle Corps Figure Pack 1-4 (figure insert; by Hama; canonicity unlikely) Special 1 (rejected McFarlane art for #61) Frontline 1-4 (by Hama; presumably retconned by IDW) Storm Shadow 1-7 (by Hama; presumably retconned by IDW) 25A Comic Packs 4, 6, 8, 9, 11, 12 (by Hama; chronology unclear) Order of Battle 1-4 (character guide; just miscellaneous) "Hijacked" from G.I. Joe Magazine #1 (by Hama; canonicity unlikely) Super Trooper Figure Ad (figure insert; author unknown; canonicity unlikely) I know it's not perfect. I know there are some ambiguous points. I had to make a few judgment calls. If anyone has any serious critiques please feel free to let me know. I've spent literally a year trying to get all of this sorted while also rearranging pages for the bind itself, so this is all I've got. No saved rounds. I hope it helps. [1] These aren't in chronological order because they weren't released to be read that way. The publication order belies this, along with no interweaving/crossover between the issues. YMMV. [2] This was written by Hama and included in the Snake Eyes: Declassified TPB. [3] "Special Missions" issue with flashback involving Duke and Roadblock that dovetails into their initial appearance in ARAH. [4] This was placed here in flashback in the abandoned Complete Collection series. [5] "Untold Tales" issue that clearly states when it occurs. [6] This fit here without problems, although it required a judgment call. [7] This is nearly impossible to reconcile with continuity (except when it isn't). There are several references to the past few issues, and the final one is from Dr. Mindbender about using the Brainwave Scanner on Snake-Eyes in YB3. In order to set the series after referenced events (and without awkwardly intermingling it with ARAH's issues), this is the only place it kind of works. [8] This is when Special Missions went monthly, which is why there is a large grouping here. It roughly parallels the months of ARAH that precede it. [9] Issues 14, 15, 18, and 19 are a story arc. 16 is a crossover issue and 17 is a standalone. Issues are arranged accordingly. [10] This is where the Transformers: G2 issues would take place. The Joe team members are in a few issues of a larger storyline which is collected in the book "Dark Designs." Plucking out just their three appearances would be disjointed and dropping an entire Transformers story in the middle of G.I. Joe would be excessive. [11] Captions clearly states that 143 takes place after 134 and that 144 takes place after 142. [12] "Untold Tales" issue that clearly states when it occurs. [13] In a backup to Scarlett's "Special Missions" issue, we see Dawn Moreno complete her training at Fort Polk, LA. [14] Per Hisstank user J James, 256-259 ("The Cobra's Venom") follows up on the Revanche / Bombstrike plotline last seen in 245. Silent Option was published during the same months, but it cannot happen prior to this because Bombstrike is already in the middle of an ongoing mission. In 259 she returns to the PIT, allowing her to be dispatched by Hawk for Silent Option. The plot threads from this arc are tied up in 259 and it ends on a good cliffhanger to come back to later. [15] This Yearbook is placed before it came out, but it shows Dawn returning from the aforementioned training to Granny's shop in the East Village, where she says she's been assigned to the Chaplains Assistants Motor Pool. Helix is not with her. So this is clearly before her big first mission to save Helix since they are generally together and with Obaake after this point. Major point: here the BN supervisor describes the recent attacks by Destro's forces. Thanks to J James for the correction. [16] Prelude to Silent Option revealed as a backup in issues #1-4 of the miniseries, in which Hawk dispatches Bombstrike to find Helix. Dovetails immediately into Silent Option. [17] Silent Option and "The Cobra's Venom" came out during the same months, but Silent Option appears to take place afterward. Bombstrike and Dawn are on this mission so it cannot happen prior to this placement. Alpine is there but his mission is complete about halfway through issue 3. Credit again to J James. [18] Short piece from IDW's Women's History Month Special "Synergy." Dawn contemplates having Snake-Eyes in her mind. Fits here between arcs just fine. [19] This is labeled as the last chapter in "The Cobra's Venom," but it is actually a prelude to the next arc, "Artificial Intelligence." Milo is placed at the San Francisco headquarters. Alpine is there so he is back from Silent Option #3. The plotlines for "Artificial Intelligence" are set up here. Thanks to Option38.com and J James. This story flew under my radar, so thanks for bringing it to my attention.

This is coming along. I'm at the point of cutting and rearranging books. I have to make a second round of printed pages to fix some oversights on my part, a torn page, etc. Overall, my months of planning and ordering paid off and it should be in the mail to the bindery next week. I'll take some pictures before they depart so we can see a before and after.

These have been bundled. I am going to make one more pass through them to make sure nothing is upside down or backwards and check for any damaged/incorrect pages that require reprinting and replacement. Pre-shipping pics coming tomorrow.

One year and five months. That's how long it took to assemble this binding project of the complete run of A Real American Hero and all of its interpolations (and the IDW continuity). One of my graduate degrees didn't take this long.
Here's a pic before they head to the bindery. When they come back, I'll take more. Thank you to everyone for answering my questions, referring me to resources, and otherwise encouraging me in this project. I used the old IDW G.I. Joe Classic and Special Missions trades. I scanned and remastered the 25th Anniversary issues and some other bits. I placed everything in chronological order and created tables of contents, introductions, and endsheets. I removed all of the ads. I ended up with 18 volumes--10 for the Hamaverse, one for Declassified, and seven for the IDW continuity (concluding with Snake Eyes: Agent of Cobra). I used bits of material from the existing Complete Collection volumes where I could. I'm glad this is over. I'm sure my wife is happy to stop hearing about it. It's been a strangely emotional--not to mention exhausting--experience. I think it's probably some kind of not-so-subtle effort to reclaim childhood. If you break that down, it's fear of aging, which is fear of death. I have such incredibly fond memories of playing with G.I. Joe figures as a child, waging small wars on the carpet while the cartoon played. Some of those 22 minute episodes felt grand in scale back then. I've rewatched them and I know they're silly, but I remember how they made me feel. This is a strange culmination of part of my past that is, evidently, woven into my subconscious. After IDW abandoned the Complete Collection series and I decided to do this, I opened a wound. I felt like I couldn't avoid it. I felt like the very idea wouldn't let me. I told my wife that the project was getting into my head. I thought I was finished a few times, but I'd find a gap or a problem and then I would work on it again for weeks. For what it's worth, she told me to finish it and do it right. She could see what it meant. She also knew I'd never let it go until it was as close to perfect as it could possibly be. Love is putting up with someone's eccentricities as much as it is enjoying their best qualities. I think this speaks to both. |

This looks like an enormous amount of work, and its great to see it come to final fruition. Congratulations and always treasure the work you did here.
