I'm digging the art and the toned down colors. It's a good fit for this book.

I wonder when we'll see Zarana & Zandar, and the Dreadnoks again. Zartan needs a vacation.

I'm kind of the wet blanket on this one. I've loved having Hama's ARAH back, but many of the elements highlighted in this issue just push my suspension of disbelief too far. I like to think that Joe takes place in our world; sure, maybe there's some technology I don't know about (B.A.T.S, lasers, underground headquarters...), but every time I see Cobra Island I can't help but frown and say "there's an island full of flesh eating zombies...but nobody really cares? There's a clone of Ghengis Khan as Serpentor there too, really?" I'm also not a fan of the blue ninjas or revanche. It seems like a lot of telling us how awesome they are, with laser swords and kamikaze mode and all, but not really showing us.
I did like what we saw of the Joes here though. Spirit didn't have much dialogue, but his stoic attitude and proficiency made me feel like I really got to know him. I was also somehow surprised to hear Snake Eyes speak, although it made sense after a second, but that scene was just ninja enough for my tastes. I was also confused by Dawn's actions, but I think I was meant to be. Her reunion with her parents and that final panel of dialogue made me really curious to see what's going on.

That's not why he set off the bomb. He had been told by Mindbender that the bomb turned its victims into unthinking zombies, G.I. Joe was on the verge of capturing him, and he thought being turned into a mindless monster was a better outcome than being a prisoner. Any benefits of the mutation, including the zombies getting to keep their intelligence and personality, were only discovered after the bomb went off.

I have been super critical of RAH for the last few years but I really the love the new series. It's mainly the tremendous artwork. So detailed and realistic. Mooneyhams layouts and storytelling is great. I'm not much of a fan of revanche though. It's been around for years with no real purpose. The characterization of the mutants/zombies isn't consistant. They seem to be totally coherent now. Hopefully Mooneyham will stay onboard awhile.

Hama loves Zartan. He's not going anywhere.

What have I just read?
That was just a mess. It’s so different to what Hama used to write that it’s like it’s not him anymore. Not a fan.

Revanche needs to go away. Why add another enemy group when there are so many individual Cobras that Hama has never used (Big Boa, Overlord, Gnawgahyde, Interrogator, Overkill, Gristle, Black Out, etc.).
As for the zombies, if you were going to do a zombie/mutant bomb, why not take the opportunity to have that bomb create Bio-Vipers and Monstro-Vipers, and have the Mega-Vipers attempt to handle them? Hama is a good writer, but I feel like he was a better writer when he was told to include the toys in his stories. Those directives from Hasbro gave him some guide-rails that kept him focused on the fact that this comic book is based on something... a toy line. Adding a handful of side characters is fine, but Revanche is just a distraction. Let's get back to writing about G.I. Joe vs Cobra, Iron Grenadiers, Dreadnoks, and Headhunters. |
