I remember that!
The thing that I've noticed in recent years, though, is that there's been a pretty significant shift in how fans feel about Cobra-La and the movie itself. So today's audiences are probably a bit more receptive to the idea than they were back then. Hell, I'm more receptive to the idea than I was back in '87 - which wasn't something I was expecting to happen.

The horrendous 2013-14 GI Joe/Transformers crossover? Everything about that was just awful, horrendous story worse than the worst Dic episodes, dollar store bootleg unlicensed coloring book quality art, every character off model, proportions and perspective is all over the place, it had magic marker quality coloring, nothing casts shadows in the art, bad characterization, characters and plots appearing suddenly and disappearing just as fast with little to no explanation, cameos that serve no purpose but to be member berries.
It was the worst Transformers or GI Joe merch I've ever seen. Last edited by sisco; 01-29-2024 at 02:15 PM.. |

IDW was pretty horrible at doing "events" They would have 2 -3 buildup issues that were decent. Then, they would do a bunch of middle issues that seemed to go nowhere plot wise. Finally, at the end, there would be a rushed out mess with terrible art, trying to deliver on a story and wrap everything up.

Skybound/Energon Universe feels to me like the "Marvel Utlimates" version of the Sunbow universe. All the crazy of the original but made for a more mature audience who has aged with the mythology while also opening it up to younger audiences.
I really hope this can get people under 30 into G.I.JOE and from all indications this seems like the best attempt yet. As we all know, Sunbow was bananas and connected GIJOE, Transformers, Inhumanoids and Jem. Sunbow featured robots, clones, ghosts, monsters, dinosaurs, baby-rays, mind-control chewing gum, etc etc and of course snake people. Destro's family had a Cthulu monster in their basement. Airborne's brother was a mutant with telepathic abilities. There were Ancient Egyptian Gods... I mean, Sunbow was essentially a superhero comic-verse and Kirkman knows superheroes very well so this is exactly what I expected from Skybound and it's a ton of fun so far. I could also see Kirkman parlaying this into an animated series a la Kevin Smith's He-Man... Anyway, super great first issue in my opinion and if you're on the fence I reccommend giving it a try. I have always loved the Sunbow universe and Larry's universe so personally it's a great time to be a G.I.JOE comics fan.

I found the comic making more sense than the movie.

I think Rom would be a great fit, but IDW's Rom worked well because people already cared about the character. The rest of the properties kind of bombed because nobody cares about MASK, or Micronauts (without the Marvel characters), or Visionaries. You can't really add something just because "it'd fit well"; you need a proper story to tell, and I don't think MASK has it. Inhumanoids might, but as the last-minute pivot to Fatal Fluffies that IDW did shows, Hasbro no longer owns the rights to Inhumanoids (somehow).

Bryan Flynn filed for the abandoned Hasbro trademark Inhumanoids back in 2014 for Super7 to use in the toy market, not sure what he and Super 7 ever did with it but they had it at the time for toy lines. In 2015 Marvel/Disney apparently opposed the Trademark when Hasbro tried to renew it for use in the crossover comic. It was too similar to Inhumans which already existed as a comic and Marvel was trying to make the property work as a Movie and eventually a TV show at the time so Disney was super protective of the trademark. Marvel didn't care about the use of the Inhumans part of the name in the 80s as they were the ones making the Inhumanoids comic and show for Hasbro. Hasbro apparently also lost the Trademark to Earth Corps at some point and had to use a new name for it in the comic instead. I couldn't find who had the trademark at the time. Hasbro can use all the Inhumanoids characters, monsters, etc... as those are copywritten intellectual property they own, but Hasbro can no longer sell them as "Inhumanoids" and "Earth Corps" unless Marvel and Flynn let those Trademarks lapse like Hasbro did. |

Well, no, that's just factually untrue. The 2016 GI Joe run was planning to use the Inhumanoids monsters but at the last minute Sitterson was told there were legal issues preventing Hasbro from using them, so they had to use the Fatal Fluffies from the cartoon instead. The "Rom: Dire Wraiths" comic had expies of the Earth Corps, but all of them had different names and designs; "Sandra Shore" became "Sandra Shen", Edward "Auger" Augutter became Elmo "Scalpel" Aubreyson, et cetera. The "Unit:E" comic that came out in SDCC, which was entirely reboot pitches for Hasbro properties, had an obvious Inhumanoids riff in "Primordia", but all the monsters were newly-invented ones.
It's not clear HOW it happened, but it's obvious that at least as far as Hasbro is aware, they are not able to use the Inhumanoids. And based on how eager they've been to use everything else they own, they'd surely be trying to make an Inhumanoids reboot if they could. |
