I just hope Zandar survives in this new universe and Zarana cares about him.

If I had to guess, probably because of the snakes that were healing him after that explosion.

Overall, I'm not a fan of a "combined universe" and Cobra-la isn't my thing... but this is a different continuity than Hama's and a well done issue (like Duke #1) so I'm curious to see where it goes. The '91 CC uniform was a nice nod and CC being a human (apparently) that was allowed to join Cobra-la is an unexpected twist.

It's also clear that he is a human in this continuity and not a Cobra La Snake person. Really like they are going with the gross disfigured face like Sunbow commander had from the cartoon, gross enough to make Destro almost throw up, without going with the horrible Movies multi eye version. Man, I am late to the party this time! I just got my copy today and was absolutely blown away. This is crazy! Lots of crazy details in there. This EU stuff is starting strong. I feel like Williamson has hit it right on the head so far. The guy is very clearly a fan of this stuff. I like that he is leaning in to crazier element of the franchise, but making them make more sense. Reminds me a lot of what the IDW continuity did for Transformers. I can't wait to see what weird and awesome direction they take SE and SS. I feel like this is some of the best art in the EU right now. It just seemed so (for lack of a better word) spot on.

Has you told me a few years ago I'd have enjoyed a Cobra-La based comic, I'd have called you insane - but I actually loved this. I think my main problem with Cobra La originally was that Cobra Commander was one of them, rather than a human, and the ridiculous snake transformation he had to endure.
Making CC a human scientist who was allowed to enter the kingdom by Golobulus, and who clearly has his own agenda, immediately makes the whole thing much more tolerable to me. Loved that his wacky 1991 outfit was used as Cobra La uniform! Really enjoying how he is essentially being written as Chris Latta's CC, but much more dangerous and intelligent. In one issue he's proved more competent and menacing than Hama's CC has in about 100 issues. Was intrigued by who "Grunt" was at the end, and whether that was meant to be THE Grunt, and this guy will eventually join the Joes, or whether this "Grunt" was just a dismissive insult. At first I thought that guy was going to be Nemesis Enforcer... |

So I'm a guy who bought G.I. Joe #1 off a spinner rack in a grocery store in 1982. The toys were still forthcoming at that point. I've never been a G.I. Joe: The Movie fan due to Cobra-La and Falcon's treatment. Plus I was starting to move on in 1987. I'm pretty loyal to the original concept and the first 20 issues so I always preferred the realistic take.
That said...I really enjoy embracing the cartoon for the Energon Universe. I think the problem with the non-ARAH stuff at IDW was that they wanted to have Cobra do sci-fi stuff but still wanted the Joes to be a little more realistic in a military sense. I like that Skybound has gone all in for this take (even if Larry is using cyborgs, zombies, and clones in ARAH). So count me in and even though I've never been a big Transformers guy, I'm loving that book too. The Energon Universe is the most exciting thing in comics for me right now! The minute I saw Cobra-La, I was out. I'm glad others are enjoying it but it's not for me. We've had some cool Cobra Commanders in media; my favorites are Renegades, the original in IDW, and the origianl from Marvel comics - especially early in the series when Cobra was actually scary.

I picked this up and read it over the weekend. To be honest, I kind of hate it (not a fan of Cobra-La, at all. They even do the awful Co-BRA-LALALALALA crap in the issue). I'm only giving it a chance because the Transformers and Duke comics they're doing in the same universe have been stellar.
