Had you said, "what Return of the Jedi is to Star Wars" or "what the EU is to Star Wars" or even "what the prequels are to Star Wars" I might have agreed with you, but the sequel trilogy came along far too late for me to still have any sense of an undefiled Star Wars purity.

Absolutely love the spread of Coco staring up at Megatron. What an insane piece of art, it's glorious.

Wooooow.
Holy shit. I loved it. Cobra La was definitely a surprise, but I really liked the fact that it corrected some of my biggest issues with that origin for CC. I hated that the blue guy with many eyes reveal so strongly contradicted the hooded and ungloved appearances we'd seen beforehand. I always thought that CC should have been an outsider trying to manipulate and/or utilize those wacky folks for his own gain. And now he is! Yayyyyyy. I also really liked that it fleshed out why the heck a technology-hating society would send someone out to start a tech-loving band of baddies. I've still got a lot of catching up to do before I can read Hama's stuff, but I am absolutely all over this series. Oh. And the 91 red faceplate popping up? I felt like dancing.

I was completely caught off guard with this issue....and I like it. If were gonna put joe in a universe with transformers and void rivals, lets lean into the weird. It nice to have a change from the same thing over and over again. I also really love seeing cobra commander as a true villain. Reading that they want to go for a horror vibe with this book has my attention.

Curious to see how they'll handle Snake Eyes in this new universe.
All of Hama's backstory seems to be out the window, for good or bad. A lot of the other interpretations still used so much of it in their versions. Does he even need to be a mute, disfigured ninja this time? Or is that out of the question to tamper with? I don't want ScarJo whitewashed Major from GITS. I don't walk walking Prof X (after the disabling). I don't want silent Deadpool. I don't want Marion as Talia al Ghul. I don't want Middle Eastern Leon Kennedy. They just don't feel like the characters to me. When you introduce someone, when the character gets stuck in my mind, that's who they are. Snake-Eyes needs to be a silent white dude who hides his face, level of scarring/plastic surgery is debatable. I don't like that he is talking so much in ARAH in his new body, I hated the Origins movie SE (no offense to Golding who really went for it and seems a great bloke), but I want the Snake-Eyes from my childhood. CoCo is already a departure from the character I love, but it could be salvagable, depending. |

Talia is my favorite bat gal. That shit was an insult to her good name.

I'm... oddly classicalist/conservationalist with media.

This was great, its like a grittier Sunbow Joe. Loving everything about the Energon universe so far. They fixed the only issue with Cobra La I ever had immediately by saying Cobra Commander was from outside of Cobra La and not a Cobra La blue skinned reptile person. Pythona looked great, Golobulus being so shadowed makes me think hes not half a snake yet. Kind of expect their prisoner to rip him in half on escape so he has to be grafted onto the snake.
Speaking of which Megatron being a captive of Cobra La was something I did not see coming at all. Love the 91 red faceplate suit making an appearance and I really love Cobra Commanders Old Snake fedora wearing look, really need a figure with that look. Curious if the Grunt namecall was the generic grunt minion reference or if this disguised Cobra La agent will actually infiltrate the Joe's as Grunt. Can't wait to see the Nok's next issue. So far the Energon universe is everything I've wanted for Joe after the Sunbow run/Animated movie and the Transformers after Sunbow Season 2. It finally feels like the brands are living up to the crossover story potential first shown when Megatron was turned into Tank by Cobra in Generation 2.
