Figured one discussion thread would suffice for both issues.
Preview for #301. There doesn't appear to be a preview of #1 Larry Hama Cut, though I imagine most people here are already familiar with the story. |

Great issue. Great writing, great art, and I get a strong sense things are going in a great direction.
Love the colors—I can’t describe it, but there’s an old school vibe to them. Love Mooneyham’s style and his depiction of Cobra Commander. Love how he signs off on the last panel. I’ll comment more after I read it again. Last edited by stopdead; 11-15-2023 at 03:02 AM.. |

These are just the same pages we've seen before, so it is kind of funny the site says "never before seen" since this has been previewed so hard. But, here we go I guess.

Art is excellent. Mooneyham's heavy inks and Segala's "faded newsprint" colors give the action a much more intense feel than we often got from IDW's issues, and also make the book stand out from Reilly and Milana's art styles on the Energon Universe Joe comics.
Story-wise, structuring everything around the countdown clock worked well, with the new art style again supplying a greater sense of urgency. The big death probably would've had more impact if the cover for #302 hadn't given it away. Curious to see what happens now that Serpentor and Mindbender are mutants, as well as seeing Laura's fate now that she's left Cobra. Hoping that Sean doesn't remain "Snake Eyes but he has a headband" for the long term and gets his own unique look soon. I don't think this was particularly effective as an entry point for new readers. Hama tries to subtly weave the exposition into the dialogue, but there's so much going on, and so many characters, that it would probably have been best to expand the opening recap to 4 pages and explain some more stuff upfront. My biggest complaint: in the PDF download copy from the Google Play store, several character names are horrifically misspelled in the end bios. "Storm Skadow?" "Codra Commander?" "Dr. Minbbender?" "Serpentor Kahn?" Weirdly, these typos aren't in the web version, so I don't know whether the PDF is an older, unedited draft or if there's just some issue on Google's end. |
