Cobra Commander seems to be getting his mojo back based on his actions in this issue. I hope we see more of him this way. The issue is 22 pages if you count the two page recap at the beginning. Will future issues be 20 or 22 pages?!? I couldn't be happier with this issue and I'm psyched to see what happens next. |

Issue #1
So we are all familiar with issue #1 so the main thing to discuss is the things unique to this edition of the story. First of all, something I did not know going in, is that it is printed on newsprint! I personally have no nostalgia for news print, but it was still way cool. As for the changed line, you really don't appreciate how this changes the book until you read it. The "and be forgotten" hits a lot harder than I expected. Issue #301 Wild Bill got some classic crash and burn awesomeness, so of course I'm all about that. I'm not really sure how I feel about zombie cobras, but it is something new. Overall there was not a lot in this issue to convince me to hop back on the monthly band wagon, but I may pick it up in trade, if it goes well. No matter what I or anyone else thinks of the comic itself, it still way cool to Larry Hama putting out G.i. Joe comics after all these years. The real question is, how many C-130 models do you think he owns?

Let Larry know on Facebook. He always appreciates when people let him know what they like to see in the book.

It didn't disappoint. I wrote my first letter to Larry after reading it.

I think we're OK for spoilers in this thread, right? I've got some below.
Fun issue, and I'm psyched that ARAH is back! I enjoyed Mooneyham's art, and I really enjoyed his post-script where he talked about his dad being a corpsman, and himself going to a military school (as one of the kids who went to get straightened out!). I liked the introductions, but was surprised to see Dr. Mindbender listed as 2ic of Cobra--how long has that been? I was worried to see Serpentor Khan, mutant-zombie bomb, and Alpha-0001 or whatever. I wasn't crazy about these elements in the IDW run, so I think I must have willfully forgotten about them. I felt like Hama was back in the saddle with his Hama-isms and the C-130. I'm not sure what it is, but I somehow love Hama's exposition in those scenarios. I also liked seeing Cobra Commander come off as a real threat. I don't think it came as a surprise to any of us that Wade was the one to go, and this thread in particular seemed a little rushed to me. The book's been gone for so long that Hama had to recap, and then sort of touch on all the dangling plot threads, but this is the only one I feel like got short changed. When CC shot Wade I didn't even realize he was dead. I guess I thought we might get a deathbed speech or something, but like one panel later they're telling throwdown "mourn your dad later, we gotta get that door closed!!" Overall, I'm super-excited and glad ARAH is back! As far as the Hama-cut goes, I kind of feel like I'm enabling Skybound and other publishers. I knew about the change in dialogue, and I'm glad they did it, but I'm disappointed in myself for buying it and feel like Skybound was a little dishonest in marketing it. I knew exactly what I was doing, and I like the Cobra-version of the cover and love the reproduction of the original cover, but the marketing still rubs me just a bit the wrong way. Despite that complaint, I loved reading it again, I loved having it on newsprint, and seeing "hot potatoe" as well as Clutch's and Steeler's pages describing their vehicles. All that really brought me back to the time when, after collecting the toys for a few years, my buddy showed me his Marvel comics and I saw how much richer the Joe world could be. |
