The absurd proportions still come to mind as well as the awful Battle Commander Duke (Desert Storm fatigues) artwork that seemed berserk compared to the artistic flow of other artists.

The writing was always the strong point of the line. The art was pretty inconsistent between Trimpe and Whigham, but pretty strong from Whigham to Bright (with a couple of exceptions).
Read issues 30 (Springer) and 31 (Whigham) back to back and note the dramatic difference in art. I think Springer is a capable artist, but his work on Joe was pretty bad. Issue #37 may be the worst drawn issue of the entire series. Whigham had more of a clean, realistic style that fit really well. Wagner was similar, but his art came off too "sketchy" at times, like he was rushing to fit a deadline. Still a lot better than Springer, though. Whigham's art is awesome, though. |

For me the downhill slope is:
#1-#20: top tier Huge drop #21, which began the Snake-Eyes-ification of Joe, so it was a big step down, so from there to the end of the Cobra civil war. From that point on, it was really a slog to get through them, though it was still sorta readable There was an uptick in writing near the end when Destro, Baroness, and Billy are in the castle, that sort of began closing out some stories in a normal manner. Massive nosedive when Snake Eyes' name became part of the title. Small uptick for the last few issues being Star Brigade, and Snake Eyes was nowhere to be found. IDW...I dunno, it had so few bright spots, and when they were airlifting in Snake Eyes Cabin #2, I was just done giving it a second chance.

Ironically enough, I've been re-reading the old IDW "Classic" collections. I'll say numbers 3 and 4 are probably the best. You have the original silent issue, the Snale Eyes origin two-parter, the classic air battle between the Skystriker and the Rattler, the introduction of many classic characters, etc. The art is the only thing that brings it down as Springer, again, was just really bad on Joe.
I'd probably place 1-20 right below that. |

If they made animated Joe feature films, I'd want them to be based (or even accurately based) upon the first 50 or so issues. Not every moment was a hit, but there were some great stories told.

I didn't like 1-20, but I was always about the ninja action. Once Storm Shadow & Zartan entered the chat, it took off. Then Serpentor kind of killed it.

There's also a sort-of "Dreadnoks tear up an airport" scene in G.I. Joe vs Transformers.
