I love the early RAH and some of the early run of the continuation was good. But the last few years has been total crap. It's written for a 7 year old. The stories are drawn out, boring and go nowhere. Besides Helix the new characters are dull and uninteresting.
Anytime there is a ninja he takes out 20 cobras like he's superman. In the famous issue 21, SE takes on SS and 3 red ninjas. Only 3. Can I get some realism? Cobra is no threat. Cobra Commander is more a buffoon than in the comics. And why so much use of Dr Mindbender? When is the last time Scrap Iron or Firefly have been used? Comics today are written for 6 issue arcs for the trades. A style not suited for Hamas writing style. The story should dictate the length. I'm assuming the overwhelming majority of people reading this comic are in there 40's or older and aren't interested in a kids book. I'm not saying it has to be like the Punisher but can I get something better than a Cobra Casino? That is a plot for the DIC cartoon. To me the best reboot of GI Joe was the Chuck Dixon version. It was a reboot but still very recognizable as GI JOE. And no ninjas. We owe a lot to Hama. But he has been phoning it in. I don't believe anyone thinks this comic has even been "good" in a long time. It's just hoping for a cameo or some semblence of what it was. |

He has been phoning it in since ending the DD run. That was his last good work.
It's felt like he's just been collecting a paycheck since then. Take some solace in that it'll all be over soon, and let's just hope someone else more competent takes up the reins. I read up to issue 280-something, but really had decided I was done when they airlifted a replacement Snake Eyes cabin into the scene in whatever issue that was. It was a level of stupid even DIC wouldn't touch. |

I used to be really hard and harsh on Hama. And then, yes, my absolute dream as a fan came true in his book and my tune changed. But it's more than that. I communicate with Hama and have experienced him to be an eloquent, thought provoking person who is far from incompetent. Like has been mentioned, maybe writing "for the trades" isn't suited to him. But he's far from incompetent.

Totally agree, I was the biggest die hard Hama only joe fan I could be, but he went a long way to make me 180. I can live the repeating the same events over and over (attack the pit, attack the silent castle, capture snake eyes, brainwave scanner). I could overlook forgetting he had killed off characters. I could be patient with like 10 years of head spinning blue ninja. I didn?t appreciate the increasingly radical political messaging. But the thing that broke it for me, was killing off the main character in an out of character way (master ninja is too stupid to just toss the grenade back), and then rubbing that fact in our faces in every issue with more than one of his not snake eyes snake eyes. Also filling the book with new and unneeded characters with dumb names like Sherlock when hundreds of joe characters could have been given more development.
And, unfortunately, he?s supposed to be continuing the series with issue 301 with the next publisher. |

I didn't get to read the full Hama run of the original series until around the year 2000, and it blew my ass away.
Before that, I was already a huge fan cause I read his Wolverine monthly. In its heyday, it was better than anything Claremont did with the character, in my opinion. When Hama took over Wolverine, it was like he infused life into the comic book. Before that it was just a series of one limp fill-in issue after another. His run had all kinds of insane action, character, tons of intriguing backstory mysteries, new characters. It was amazing. But....the cracks started developing after a few years. Plots and mysteries started getting piled up, not adding up to what had gone before. In time, the whole plot became a convoluted mess that made no sense and it was obvious to me Hama was just making things up as he went. He eventually left the book, but no monthly Wolverine writer has ever been able to touch his best stuff. (Issues 31 to about 66, in my opinion.) Over at DC, Batman was going through a big reboot around the year 2000. One of the new writers being brought in was Hama. I had been steadily losing interest in the monthly Bat-books for years, and I decided to give Hama's run a try. It was awful. Unreadable. I was shocked. I had no idea a veteran writer like him could flop so hard...on BATMAN of all characters!! It made my decision to walk away from Batman monthlies that much easier, and I've never looked back. Hama is uneven at best. When he's "on," he's absolutely fantastic, mainly being the aforementioned Wolverine run and GI Joe's original run. Of course we all have different opinions on when the original Joe lost its luster...I say it was solid right up to around issue 100. When Hama is "off"...he's really off!! I know he was proud of Nth Man, but I found it almost unreadable it was so dull and the characters so uninteresting. I only managed to read a handful of the current ARAH issues over all these years cause every time I'd try it would be CC and Mindbender acting like goofballs and all the Joes were unknown women characters, and the art is almost always garbage. There were two issues I thought were fantastic. The one that was about remembering fallen soldiers, and the most recent one that was another Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow flashback to Vietnam. That's it. I think Larry has earned his place in comic book history, but the man is not a god or anything. Just like most artists, he's produced some amazing stuff, but he's capable of turning out crap, too. |

The last time I remember Firefly being used, was when Snake Eyes, in Dawn Moreno's body, was hunting him down.

I actually never read anything after the original 155 issue run. Even that one had elements I hated back then. I loved the Joe comics but just didn't like some elements. When I heard he killed SE, I didn't even bother reading up to see what happened. I still don't remember
what his Sneak Peek resurrection explanation was.

Hama's basic problem is that he's essentially always written using the infamous JJ Abrams "Mystery Box" style, which is why his single issue, contained stories, removed from the long story arcs, are usually his best. He was able to get away with making it up as he went in the good old days, because he had the skill and memory to come up with satisfying payoffs for any mysteries he set up. Today, he comes up with threads that he either completely forgets, or gives them completely unsatisfactory and nonsensical conclusions, just like Abrams. He has simply lost the ability to come up with satisfying stories. I'll let Rush say the rest: |
