On another note, I think a lot of the problems Hama has are exacerbated by one person said, "what the comic fans want from comics these days", which is double-talk for not being willing to publish in a format that suits either the IP or the writer.
"Writing for the trades" is another pure cancer on the comic industry. Forcing these long-form stories and devaluing the individual readability of a single issue just kills any casual readership (and the money that comes with it.) The comic execs are unwilling to take any risk on making a monthly comic accessible by doing self-contained stories every month, and I'm afraid Hama will be dead before someone in a position of power has the good sense to try this again anywhere, much less with GI Joe. |

The weird thing about the trades influence, I have the marvel run in trade and it’s a nice 10 issue per volume set. I actually prefer that.

Hasn't the transition to digital made trades obsolete?

Not really. Graphic novels are by far the biggest component of the comics industry, and digital sales aren't growing fast enough to overtake them anytime soon.

?every time I'd try it would be CC and Mindbender acting like goofballs and all the Joes were unknown women characters, and the art is almost always garbage.?
Exactly. I have learned a lesson. It?s actually better to never get more of a cool franchise than to see it become so unpalatable. I?d be better off having never read the idw run. To see characters you hung in there so long with be crapped on. Killed in a stupid way. Replaced by new silly characters. Star Wars could have lasted longer but Disney are awful

Manga isn't popular because it's a compiled volume, there's way more to it than that. - Manga is in the Japanese art style, and that's what's popular. - It's got pages that are more similar to the old 4-color pages - easier to read in normal lighting - It makes use of the white pages, rather than fighting it, i.e. trying to essentially black-ink a white page - It's cheap - It's black and white, so cheap to produce - It's easy to put in a purse or backpack because of its small size, and makes it easy to share as well. - The art style and content is uniform in most books - i.e. it's not an artists' showcase. Content is king. Consistency is king. I can't stress this one enough - when people go looking for something they like and have a certain style in mind, they don't want the latest crapshoot, they want what they expect to see. Imagine the backlash if they changed the art style of the Dragonball series. Inversely, western comic publishers have no problem doing this constantly whether it drives away readers or not. - Full runs are constantly kept in print, making it very easy for new fans to get in. Too long, didn't read: American comic book publishers are run by idealists and prima donnas who are allowed to run rampant with company money trying to make a name for themselves, to the deficit of the publishers and the industry as a whole, and this is what's driving the comic book industry into the toilet. Disclaimer: I don't actually own any manga, but my fiance and close friends do, and I've looked at enough of it to see the appeal of the format. |
