I actually never read anything after the original 155 issue run. Even that one had elements I hated back then. I loved the Joe comics but just didn't like some elements. When I heard he killed SE, I didn't even bother reading up to see what happened. I still don't remember
what his Sneak Peek resurrection explanation was.

I think the issue with Hama is a complex one. First off, I don?t believe he is, innately, a bad writer. A solid chunk of his original Marvel run was damned solid, especially Special Missions, and he had a great run on Wolverine and he helped create Bucky O?Hare and was influential in the highly praised The ?Nam comic series. The guy is no hack.
HOWEVER, I feel, like Otomo said, his work can be variable. I think his best work is stuff he?s invested in and has a desire to do. I think he has a desire to work on new and different things as well. But, I?m not sure he ever really had a desire to return to GI Joe. He?s never hid the fact he did much of that work was for the paycheck. He?s proud of his work on GI Joe, mind you, but even towards the end of the original run, I think he just got tired of being stuck in the same ?rut? because he was so limited by Hasbro?s oversight and edict to use the new toys. Even though those restrictions, I feel, helped foster creativity and helped the book by PREVENTING the creation of those long, drawn out, arcs. He knew that most of his ?cast? was going to be cycled out every 18-24 months, so he couldn?t well do a super long story with someone like Flint, because the figure would only be available for a couple of years. Upon coming to the revival ARAH (RARAH?), he had no restrictions and just went month to month because that?s what they paid for. But is was obvious he had no ?long term? stories to tell. And it was equally obvious he didn?t have the same kind of?attachment?we have given his near complete ignorance of anything GI Joe related between 1995 and when he started issue 155.5. His usage of Sean Collins stands out because he had ALREADY been canonized as a GI Joe a full decade before reviving the old Marvel series was even a concern. His start was alright, but it feels like we reached the same point we did when the original Marvel run ended: I think he?s gotten bored with the current state of GI Joe so he?s stuck going over similar story beats to keep the whole thing moving. Hasbro?s really not introducing new toys, so he?s stuck with the existing cast. He clearly feels unwilling or unable to upend the status quo. Even the Devil?s Due series would see fit to spin off Serpentor?s Cobra faction into The Coil, or introduce the Red Shadows, anything to change the typical Joe vs Cobra dynamic. Hell, Transformers reached an unheard of level of critical acclaim and mainstream comics attention when Hasbro let IDW actually move BEYOND the Autobot vs Decepticon conflict with stuff like More Than Meets The Eye and Robots in Disguise. But he can?t do much without pissing off fans. But he?s also not invested enough to pull characters or ideas from other parts of GI Joe. I THINK he?s trying to make some of these arcs (like the Revanche AI stuff) longer form because ?that?s what comic fans want these days?, but doesn?t actually have a plan to resolve them. I feel like he?s trying to please too many masters and just isn?t invested in this anymore. When Simon Furman was given the chance to continue his Marvel run, he had a rough idea of the story he wanted to tell. And he subsequently planned that story out to complete on issue #100. Larry Hama has always written by the seat of his pants, but that?s not something that really works in today?s market and audience. Larry Hama has NO issue with continuing to write a monthly GI Joe comic book so long as he gets paid. But I?m not sure, at this stage, if he should be. GI Joe has had issues for the past 15 years trying to balance being fresh and engaging, while still appealing to an aging fan base. I?m not sure Larry Hama can do either at this point.

I started joe in the twenties having come from action force in the uk.
I love the original run. I have them all and read them regularly but even then there are problems and long before ninja force and transformers show up The best was cobra as a smaller organisation probably pre serpentor to be honest. The post 155 stuff was not great and I sold it all after snakes was killed. I didn’t mind snake eyes being written out but it wa st he way it was done and the needless replacement that was the final straw. I tried various other versions and whilst the chuckles cobra stuff was good the best I thought was Dixon reloaded. That had potential. Hamas biggest t weakness is as others have stated his make it up as you go technique. Repetition and increasing kooky stuff ruined joe. I would love a min series ending the original run set in the nineties and actually ending the storyline. I’m not really interested in more stuff unless Hama is going to do something really radical

Funny you mention that I thought that was a bloody terrible series. So disappointing. I was really excited for it as well

Exactly. I have learned a lesson. It?s actually better to never get more of a cool franchise than to see it become so unpalatable. I?d be better off having never read the idw run. To see characters you hung in there so long with be crapped on. Killed in a stupid way. Replaced by new silly characters.

Any man that has the balls to say "I don't know what happens next" is either a liar or really doesn't give a shit about his characters as long as he gets a pay check.
In some ways, I envy him. But as a fan, he lost his touch years ago and that's why I haven't read ARAH in many years (stopped shortly after issue 250). This is NOT to say he isn't a great writer (I too loved his work on Wolverine back in the day) but man GIJ ARAH is pretty much garbage nowadays. |
