I've always been lukewarm with regards to Gallant's art-style.

Agreed. But his art is serviceable, which is to say it is good enough and doesn't take away from the story, which has been the case with most of the artists we've had to endure these last couple years.
This was a filler issue. The plot didn't really advance and we know nothing more than we did after the previous issue. It feels like Hama/IDW are dragging out the story a bit. That said, the action was decent. I'm a little bothered by all of these characters going by their first name. On the Joe side there is Sean and Dawn and on Cobra there is Laura. What happened to code names? And where is Cobra Commander during all of this? |

I'd chalk that up to the series no longer being an ad for a toyline, which begs the question...should there even be G.I. Joe media that isn't serving said function?

There's some in-universe logic for Laura and Dawn: "Laura 343" is her Crimson Guard code name, and Dawn being a Cobra defector means there's no real point in trying to hide her identity from them. But calling Sean by his real name in the middle of a Cobra base full of cameras definitely doesn't make any sense if the goal is to make Cobra think he's the original Snake Eyes.

The sense of "I've already read this" I'm experiencing right now is comfortingly familiar.

Well, at least IDW is being true to form. Hype a big story line, have a decent issue intro or two. Follow up with eight or nine issues of the same thing over and over with no plot advancement. Tie it off real quick with a rushed final issue with no real satisfaction or resolution. yep, that's IDW

If anything IDW probably needed to take more control of the books. Back in the Marvel days Larry still had to follow the whims of Marvel editorial and Hasbro wants. |

Well this is all Larry's writing so not sure how IDW is to blame. Larry has been clear on how he writes, he doesn't plan anything out and it's all made up as he goes.

The worst example was way back after Destro defeated the Blue Ninjas and escaped them. It was the end of that plotline. The reader didn't need any more info. Then, the next issue Alpha showed up and vowed revenge! You haven't seen the last of me! Then, the next issue Alpha showed up (again) and vowed revenge! You haven't seen the last of me! Then he disappeared for like twenty issues or something.
