Well this is all Larry's writing so not sure how IDW is to blame. Larry has been clear on how he writes, he doesn't plan anything out and it's all made up as he goes.
If anything IDW probably needed to take more control of the books. Back in the Marvel days Larry still had to follow the whims of Marvel editorial and Hasbro wants.

That's an interesting question, and I honestly don't know. Many comic lines can serve that function indirectly given that they're working with well-established characters DC has its heavy hitters namely Batman, Marvel has its heavy hitters namely Spider-man, and Image has Spawn. So theoretically a GI Joe line could be written without that purpose in mind and just use the title to indirectly sell toys based on that title in the same way numerous Batman, Spider-Man, and Spawn lines do that. Then I'm reminded that Age of Apocalypse was one of the more recent Marvel Legends waves, MacFarlane did a Three Jokers for DC Multiverse wave to coincide with the Three Jokers story arc, and the Gunslinger Spawn figure was pushed after the comic launched. So I don't know if more traditional comics are making stories to help promote toy and collectibles why wouldn't a GI Joe comic. Hm?

Maybe? Toy line or not, I just wish it would be written like it was for the first ~50 issues. This current storyline has a bit of that feeling but it's dragged out over too many issues.

Okay, so at least we are not going to get another Serpentor. Something different instead.
The action in this is kinda the same as the last however-many issues. Dawn and Helix fight a series of identical robot ladies who all fight the same and have the same weakness. Then Sean arrives and defeats them all. And a page of new (?) content in the lab. And Snake Hunt Part Deus begins.

How is it that the artwork and covers were so much better 35 years ago?

This is just all around terrible story, art. Gallant's art has always been iffy, buy it seems so much worse right now, is this just all rushed or something cause this is terrible by even his normal standards. The whole goofy casino stuff, how stupid everything is just incredibly lazy. The super ninja stuff is just getting worse somehow too. Oh check out our super armored bulletproof, fireprood, terminator robot casino staff.... oh but SE can cut through them like butter with his sword.
This is how it's all going to end really? And we all know where this is going. They got cloning machine and all of SE memories, Dawn and Sean showing doubts of who they are... geez I wonder whats gonna happen. |

Whoever picks up the license needs to financially commit to a strong art team if they are going to see any success. And, yes, that includes dynamic covers that relate to the story inside. |

I agree with many of your comments, particularly about pacing, redundancy, and repetition. Have you ever pondered whether Larry is focusing so much attention on ninjas and robots these days because he seems to be even more of a pacifist as he ages and wants to avoid gun violence? Perhaps he feels that it is less violent to use swords on humans and save the guns for "killing" non-humans? If so, is he right to do that? Is that what today's consumers prefer? If so, is that the direction the next publisher should take Joe? Maybe Liefeld and Bowers were onto something with Snake Eyes Deadgame with the sci-fi fantasy storyline? (Personally, I enjoyed the Deadgame story and Bower's writing, but would have preferred a different artist.) |

I think they just need to go with a reboot like the original Dixon IDW stuff, but from the start make it clearly GI Joe.
The Dixon stuff I loved but it was really slow and for a large part of it folks hated how little actual GI Joe there was in it, it was just regular dudes in the military figuring out what is going on with a secret organization. It took a couple years before we really got like... GI Joe. Theres several scenes in those early years of the new IDW GI Joe where you have a bunch of Joes on a two page splash... you can barely recognize anyone except for Scarlett cause everyone looks like a generic modern operator. GI Joe Reborn from the Image days to me is the perfect modern reboot. Modern, some realism and adult stories, while also being familiar to fans. |
