Lerry's been phoning it in since the first time Serpentor died in the comic. Time to move on.

God I wish.
That Disney Dr. Rocketeer series was clearly some sort of "Monkey's Paw" situation. Quote:
No. I'm fine if they want Hama to write more, but the "Hamaverse" mythos is too much. I've tried to get into the IDW continuation several times, but it just doesn't "feel" right. Like, it's not the same without Hasbro constantly forcing new vehicles and characters on him. Some of Hama's best work was rolling with the punches.
So, no, I don't want to see Hama's ARAH continued or built on or anything like that. Been there, done that, a couple times by this point. Let's see what new writers can do with the concept.

Hasbro needs to decide if they're making this for kids or us old folks. To grow and survive they need to make it for kids. They also need a real vision holder. It can't be design by committee with a new leader every two years. It also can't be influenced by old man collectors.
They'd be smart to do a John Favreau type thing with Mandalorian. Let a creative person take some pieces from the world but build new and interesting characters that appeal to kids and adults. But that's really hard. He did it with Marvel and Iron Man before that! So they'll probably do the easy thing. Just keep repeating the same stories in the style of the older ones with the popular main characters and it'll slowly fade away. Look at DC with Batman comics. That's almost all their sales. How many times can Batman fight the Joker. How many times can Snake Eyes fight a bunch of Cobra. But I don't really have a stake in this since I just love my 80s stuff and don't really need anything new.

I agree with the idea that Hasbro needs to move on and focus on more than just 40-50 year olds who can't let go of ARAH, but at the same time kids don't even read American comics that much these days so the comic would fail to bring in kids regardless.
It's a tough spot. I'd prefer they do something new, but I'm so jaded at how everything new has to be some in your face political statement or follow some annoying trend that I'd probably dislike it anyways. |

I voted 'no'. For following reasons:
1. Ending the 'hama-verse' would allow Larry to END it, in his words. I'd like to see HIS take, not someone elses. Not to say he couldn't continue it with a new publisher, but this seems like a great opportunity to let him voice an end. 2. Like others have mentioned, the current run feels like it is treading water. Let Larry end it and move on in a different format. I wouldn't mind seeing Larry 'guest star' once a year/quarter revisiting the 'hama-verse' with more UNTOLD TALES! 3. The current Saturday Morning Cartoon mini is a fun and interesting concept, this could run continuously, with similar 4-part minis kicking off the year, followed by more OR one-shots, similar format to Sunbow cartoon. 4. I would love to see other writers/artists take on Larrys' characters, something like Chuckles in LAST LAUGH, a new publisher could have years of mini/maxi series each delving deeper into a 'simple' story, fleshing out a character without having to tie into everything else going on in a continuous running publication. The continuity, or lack there of while still striving for it, seems to be the biggest hurdle currently. I think publishing a monthly discontinuous cartoon-episode-like series alongside character-driven spotlight mini/maxi series would allow a new publisher to put a book(s) out every month while touching on that nostalgic pull of ARAH while keeping it fresh at the same time, hopefully appealing to old and new fans at the same time and growing awareness and love for the brand. |

YES. But without Hama writing it. Keep him on as an editor, creative consultant, or a "presented by" credit just to keep his name attached.
At the end of the day, a smart publisher is going to create the product that it thinks will sell best. I don't think reinventing the wheel is going to do that, but keeping things as-is won't either. I think the best strategy is to keep it familiar, but more fun than what we've been getting. I have suggested it before, but I think #301 should go back to the basics. The best super hero comics have a small team of heroes and a large cast of villains. G.I. Joe is kind of the opposite and it works against it. It has a massive cast of heroes (too big, imho) and only one real enemy (keep reading). I think #301 should go back to a small team of Joes and a large cast of villains that aren't affiliated with one another. And make them legitimate threats. Not comic relief (like Cobra Commander) or sometimes-allies with Joes (like Destro and Zartan). So Cobra is Cobra and lead by a *menacing* Cobra Commander but maybe give him a new cast that reports to him. Then separate out Zartan, Destro, Major Bludd, Firefly, etc. so they are competing threats to the world. This can all be done within the Hamaverse. And please get Dan Schoening to draw it. Best Joe artist since Rod Whigham IMHO. Last edited by stopdead; 05-11-2022 at 05:28 PM.. |
