That was my favorite page as well as Ron Josephs reveal page.

Imagine if a movie was made in the tone of the early Marvel issues which culminated in a five-minute scene of #21 using the issue as a storyboard for directing. Then the sequel could be in the tone of 22 - 35 or so, and the final movie would be like 36 - 50.

No, it was definitely supposed to be a brand new prose story. Here's what the description for the 40th Anniversary hardcover looked like up until a few days ago:
"G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero issue #21, ?Silent Interlude,? is not only one of the most recognized G.I. Joe issues, but one of the most famous comics of all time. Its groundbreaking use of art to tell a story with no dialogue or captions has become a touchstone in the history of comics, referenced in countless subsequent homages. Along with the original issue, a new interpretation is included with 22 different artists doing a single page, including Rob Liefeld, Tim Lattie, Netho Diaz, Kei Zama, Antonio Fuso, Robert Atkins, Tom Feister, Maria Keane, and more! G.I. Joe legend Larry Hama also provides a new short story where he interacts with some of the classic characters you know and love! Bonus content includes notes from creators detailing the influence and legacy G.I. Joe and Larry Hama have had on them and the comics world in general. Also included will be a gallery of the best covers and classic interior pages, along with full issues including the premiere issue that started it all!" The one that just came out is a regular comic book, but there's also a hardcover release coming in October that adds several "best of" Marvel reprint stories (#1, 24, 26, 50, 86).
I think I will wait then until the Hardcover edition as that seems to have more content with it. |

Maybe they will put the 4th wall short in issue 300?

I thought this issue was pretty well done. I concur with Xasonnex that Riches’ page was the best!

Well, I'll have to say: "Disappointed, but I love it!"
I just now got my copy, and it can obviously be a pretty quick read, but rewards taking your time (which I didn't totally do). I'm not sure if it's nostalgia or what, but I find that I often prefer the older/simpler style of art from my childhood. I remember buying one of the Neal Adams Batman TPBs and being *really* disappointed that the art had been modernized. For Joe 21 though, I really enjoyed each page and I was glad that they didn't slavishly reproduce each page, and it was interesting to see what choices the artists made. For example, I remember learning about the coloring error on page 2 of the original issue, where the middle long window within the Cobra logo was accidentally colored as part of the wall; I thought it was interesting that Freddie Williams II sidestepped the issue, and that the reprint of the original kept the mistake in there (which I believe was corrected on the reprints). I guess because I got to read the original right after, I really didn't mind the artist jump from page to page. I think my favorite is Alex Sanchez's page 4: I just really like the way he made Snake-Eyes pop in that lower panel. The sketches in comparison with the original panels was a nice touch too--I wish they had that for every page! What didn't I like? Well, I wish the new art had page numbers! I ended up counting through the issue to see who did what, and even now I'm worried that I got it wrong and I'll look dumb to the internet for eternity! Also, and most irritatingly, I feel like IDW over promised and under-delivered this issue. I feel like GI Joe has inspired a lot of people, and issue 21 seems to be really groundbreaking. I enjoyed the Chad Bowers essay, but am I wrong in thinking we were promised "essays", as in plural? I actually bought multiple copies of this issue (via mail order) because I was so excited, and while I'm not sure I'd say I feel ripped off, I can certainly say that I'd have been happy with just one copy of this particular issue. |
