Damn. Only five issues after he did the impossible and added to the Vietnam story in a meaningful way, he does a retelling of the original which completely bungles it all up.
And he just contradicted a story development from that recent Vietnam issue. Something I've been writing him several times to address, he did finally do so, then now he just seemingly undid it.

Two theories popped into my mind about this...
A: Dawn is "remembering"/dreaming this from Snake Eyes pov, filtering it through her young mind, distorting the truth of it B: It's data in the Brainwave Scanner, which may not have accurate storage of the events and is skewed that way. Just my quick thoughts after reading the preview. We'll see once we've read the issue |

My hope is that with all Mindbender?s talk about DNA tubes, clones, and Snake Eyes?s memories in the Brainwave Scanner that we get a version of the real Snake Eyes back. This close to the probable end of the series I don?t care if it even makes sense at this point. Very little else does.

Overall I think this was a solid issue. It's nice to have Gallant back for the final run and I like Maria Keane on inks. In Larry Hama news, has anyone started reading his new limited Wolverine series titled Wolverine Patch? I've only ever read Wolverine when it has been written by Hama so I picked up #1 and really enjoyed it. Say what you want about his current work on ARAH, but there was nothing wrong with what he's doing on this new Marvel series. Glad he's taking on other jobs! |

So without comparing them side-by-side, it's was what I perceived as a pacing difference changing the story. But I compared them together and it is pretty accurate, just with dialogue. I don't like how much Tommy is talking during the firefight and rescue but otherwise it seems to all be an appropriate firsthand accounting of a story we have read before. This is Snake-Eyes' version, not Stalkers'.
We are seeing a firsthand memory whereas before we heard a firsthand narrative account. Technically, we could say this might not be a firsthand memory, this might be a confused or misremembered memory, but I think it is best to assume it is intact and authentic. Also on first read I thought their experience leaving the valley happened much sooner compared to the exchange where they lost their teammates, but issue 26 clearly establishes they've had time to get acquainted with the loss and move on. On second read and after comparing both, it does read better. The other thing was the back history I am grumbling over. I'd been writing Larry for him to explain the back history of Tommy's dad since we don't know how he fits in with the Hard Master and Soft Master or what became of him. I figured that might tie in with the Blue Ninjas and give them more narrative purpose. A few issues ago Larry finally acknowledged that his dad died when Tommy was ten. That's a fine serviceable explanation. In this though he says "my folks in Fresno." To me, that means both parents. But, it doesn't have to technically. He might have meant his mom and pre-teen Jinx, who would have her own parents around too. He might just mean his American family. To me "my folks" doesn't mean my cousins and aunts and uncles, but whatever. I enjoyed the issue so I'm just grousing about new details. Learning new little tidbits.

I had a look side by side and generally it seemed pretty consistent too. As you say a bit of a change in perspective.
I guess folks would normally imply both parents but theres enough vagueness to the term there that it doesnt have to be. Maybe stormshadow has a new evil robot ninja step dad. Or maybe he died when Tommy was 10 and then he got better. |
