I liked it more than I thought I might. I thought Dawn and Helix made an interesting team, and I like the Cobra Casino idea—it seems zany like some of Cobras earlier plots, and still kind of grounded in reality. I’m also curious about the female CG (I’m not all caught up on IDW ARAH).
I wasn’t crazy about Casey Maloney’s art. It was a little too cartoony or maybe 90s for what I like my GI Joe to look like. I really, really hate Revanche Robotics though, so I tune out during a several page fight with an impossible to defeat robot (yawn), and I grimace that they’re setting up more from them. I really wish Hama could find a different antagonist. I also could have done without the cop. Their interactions with him sort of took me out of the story. So, they’re on a top secret mission but driving around in their attention grabbing uniforms? The policeman never called for backup? It annoyed me a bit to have him in the story. Despite my complaints, I’d put this one down as a winner overall! |

Together, they are an awesomely dangerous force to be reckoned with. One is a former Cobra-operative-turned-Joe after being implanted with the memories and skills of the original Snake Eyes. The other is a former victim of child trafficking- who is possessed of a unique set of strategic and warfighting skills…

I'm sorry for those who enjoy this series, but I am sick of Dawn, Helix, Revanche, that new Siegie who let Sean walk and now hangs out with Mindbender and every new character that Hama has introduced over the last two or three years. The art looked liked something out of a fanzine. No recognizable Joes, no CoCo, nothing which would remotely interest a jaded old fogie like myself.
I began reading with issue #12 back in 1983 and it's like that comic and this one were written by two entirely different people. I even went with the alternate cover just to avoid that 90s pin-up shot with Dawn jumping upside down like some EXTREME! supertype from that dreaded decade. I swear I cannot remember a single plot line since Snake-Eyes was "killed off" to make way for Sean-excuse-me-Dawn for whatever reason Hama decided that old school fans would care. But hey, enjoy the rest of 2022 if you dig all that and more power to you.

I enjoyed the issue overall. I like the casino plot--it has a certain classic ARAH feel to it and I can't help but wonder how much better it would have been if Rod Whigham and Andy Mushinsky were on art duties. ;)
I do have concerns Hama's overuse of female characters that I don't care about. I'll be curious if he circles back to Helix's observation that the female BAT knew her mother's fighting style. Terrible cover. Casey Maloney's interior art was good enough, which is to say it didn't distract me from the story like Andrew Griffith's--his artwork ruins a good story for me and guess who is drawing #290 according to Tom Waltz? Griffith. (Note: this is a contradiction to solicitations that shows Heather Vaughan as the artist.) The fact that Waltz calls Griffith "uber-talented" in the letters page tells you pretty much all you need to know about IDW's handling of the property the last year or two. I'm subscribed to ARAH, but I doubt I'll bother reading #290 as it will only bum me out. According to solicitations, Gallant returns with #291 to finish off the IDW run--far better than what we've been getting. I, too, am looking forward to what the next licensee does with Joe. Will they start over at #1 or pick back up with #301? I'd like to see the latter, but only if there is a commitment to fresh, planned out storylines and top tier artwork (including the covers). A little retconning of bad decisions would be nice, too. Last edited by stopdead; 02-25-2022 at 01:58 PM.. |

I erased what I was typing because I wanted to be positive and not negative.
It's a good thing this is ending.
