In a word: fantastic. Loved it. Brought me right back to my childhood. Fun story, great art. Dan Schoening as the perfect artist for this. And the PSA at the end was a great touch--I agree with Mainframe 100%!
I would love for ARAH #301 (when Joe moves to another publisher) to bring on this creative team. Tell these kinds of stories but perhaps a little less far fetched and still grounded in the Hamaverse. Schoening seems to have the uncanny ability to draw like anyone, so how about some Rod Whigham?!? That said, his work on ARAH #278 was perfect. Back to SMA #1--I'm psyched that we're getting this series. It's fun to enjoy a Joe comic on this level. Lastly, THANK YOU to whomever can take credit for allowing the cover to directly relate to the story inside. I'm SO tired of pinup covers that have nothing to do with the story. This was refreshing. Thanks for the reminder! I have been excited about this since it was announced. I will go pick this up this afternoon, and will post my thoughts here after I read it.
Also, I prefer discussing individual comic issues in the Comics Readers Club section. So having the thread here is good. |

If I had created another thread, someone would have complained.
Anyway, here's a copy of what I posted in the other thread: So the first issue of these was available last night on my Kindle. I finished it and was blown away by how close the art looks to the Sunbow toon. The artist and inker did some amazing work here. Destro looks particularly great. Scarlett's head shape and face is actually consistent instead of having her features move all over the place like it did in the toon. The writing is fun, and the dialog is what you'd hope to see from a Sunbow comic. You can hear the voice actors in your head as the characters rattle off their lines. There is something at the end of this comic that was both hilarious and poignant, and bookended it nicely. I heartily recommend picking this up. |

I would not want Larry Hama anywhere near this. Hama has had his run with ARAH, and I look forward to people speaking about it in the past tense. This is the first recognizable form of the product we have seen out of IDW instead of some bold, half-assed creative endeavor that changes things to an unrecognizable state yet again. Hopefully wherever the property goes, the new licensees pick this group of writers and artists up for a longer run. |

I was trying not to spoil the PSA being there, but there it is.

I agree with you. I would want this creative team (Burnham/Schoening) to take on ARAH if it continues with #301. That said, I'm only really familiar with Schoening. I need to see what else Burnham has worked on as I can't really judge him based on one issue. But so far so good.

Fair point. I just like the idea of the series continuing. I like the legacy of that. There's too many #1's these days that don't make it past a year or two--if even that. It's tiresome. I would like it to see a soft reboot of ARAH with #301. Give the writer the the freedom to retcon some things. Bring back Snake Eyes, make Cobra Commander menacing, introduce new villains, etc. Or just let the writer start over. Retell/Update ARAH #1 to re-introduce the team in a familiar way and then go from there. But do it with #301.

This Saturday Morning Adventures is rooted in an equally popular and completely separate lore and tone, so it would be unfair to it to tie it to the Hama comics. All merging the two could ever result in is complaints. |

So far the legacy has resulted in a very tired and not very good product.
