Agreed. The art wasn’t the best. Especially the people—proportions were off and faces looked wonky. And I loathe pin-up covers…they do absolutely nothing for me. A good cover teases what’s inside and draws you into the story by unraveling just enough to build intrigue.

I've often wondered if Hama is striving for another 155 issue run ... his personal goal to end with issue 310.

I also find it interesting that the larger TBPs, branded 'CLASSIC GI JOE' end with Vol.20 at issue 205.
While the smaller trades, branded 'GI JOE ARAH' reproduce 156-205 in Vols.1-10, the march toward issue 215 beginning with Vol.11 marks the beginning of the end (of my interest at least) in this title. So while I think we may see issue 310, I often wonder if it could have just stopped with issue 205 ... and did the branding department recognize something going on here as well? Probably not, I just find it interesting. UNTOLD TALES is the exception ... and SPOTLIGHT has promise. AWOL - I like your idea of a farewell arc that takes bold action to actually put an end to the run. |

I'm not on the same page with you guys at all.
All I want is better art. Let Larry write this thing as long as he can. But I wish they could get better art. We really were spoiled for artists back then.

Finally got a chance to read this one, and it was well worth the wait. Another piece to the Snake-Eyes/Storm Shadow/Stalker puzzle? Count me in. This was a good story, and had the cohesive, flowing feel to it that you get from the issues in which you can tell Hama has a plan. Issue 286 fits nicely alongside 26, 27 & 155.

That's all I'm asking for as well. I want more issues like #278, which was drawn by Dan Schoening. Great story, great art, great cover. I wish IDW would get Dan on board for a long run. He's perfect for ARAH. Every issue since (nine and counting) then has been a struggle for me to get through. This is arguably the worst run ever for ARAH from an art standpoint and it has me seriously bummed out.

Finally started to get some answers about Storm Shadow's dad. I've been practically begging for that.
Quote:
I think the continuity problem you are referring to is Stalker meeting Storm Shadow in the issue 94 flashback which would contradict this issue. Reading 94 again now, I cant see any reason that 94 flashback would not be set after the events in issue 286.
I think that contradiction only exists in the non Larry Hama cannon Snake Eyes Declassified. It's strange that Tommy would have that backstory from Larry if I'm only remembering details from Jerwa. Although this might be the case. My understanding of Snake-Eyes in his Vietnam history is CIA wetworks (Eugen DeCobra episode), doomed LRRP squad with Tommy, second doomed LRRP squad with Stalker and Tommy. I thought that all came from Larry, at least the bare bones of it. This issue doesn't actually contradict that timeline either since we don't know what Tommy and Snake-Eyes are talking about, or if they have met before. The only thing it would indicate is that Storm Shadow had three doomed LRRP squads instead of two. LRRP was potentially the most deadly duty to be in, maybe this was commonplace to lose whole squads due to the isolated nature of the job. Also, the information which Stalker is relating was second-hand from Wade, Dickie, and Ramon. Or maybe only from one of them. So, there is a little bit of an unreliable narrator situation here. The relationship between Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes may have been misunderstood from the other squad members. This wasn't meant to be an answer to "how did Snake-Eyes meet Storm Shadow," what Scarlett asked for an answer to was "how did Stalker meet Storm Shadow." The answer was he walked into this squad after they lost a leader, and met these two weird guys and their three more normal squad mates who later filled him in a bit. Also by the way, I really liked seeing more of Wade, Dickie, and Ramon in this one. This is the first time I felt like I know the personalities of Dickie and Ramon! I have been advocating for issue 310 for a few years now, and wrote Larry about it as a suggestion. This was what I wrote three months ago about this: Harada could come back as a strong narrative character to use for sort of tying up the Arashikage story. I don't think Hama has any goals to end the story wrapped up neatly with a bow as long as they can keep making money from it, but I am an advocate for that outcome. I think this title deserves a badass well-constructed ending in which people die and there is an outcome to the war with Cobra, winners and losers on both side. Like a Hama version of DDP's World War III. So that in the future if anyone asks, we can say that "this is how GiJoe ends" even if there are other continuities or whatever. My primary checklist would be seeing the final status and future plans of the Arashikage Clan, acknowledgement of whether Dawn has eliminated most of the Red Ninjas, and seriously some awareness of Tommy's position as the new Hard Master or something like that. Plus: who is his dad and what is his relationship to the old masters? ***THIS HAS NOW BEEN BASICALLY ANSWERED*** Maybe we don't need that but it's a pretty big question mark to me. Obake Obaason can just step down or die and leave him the full leadership. ***THIS HAS ALREADY HAPPENED OFF PANEL*** Tangential to that, the elimination of the Blue Ninjas completely. We are so dang close to that with all the Kansas base / Destro stuff. I want to see that resolved and finished and maybe just an acknowledgement that AI is now just part of the future world including the future of the Joe team to some degree. It's a reflection of our world as well in that respect. Plus did Tommy's dad have something to do with the Blue Ninjas, what was their initial Arashikage origin point and how does that tie in to the worldwide Arashikage Clan from before? ***HIS FATHER APPEARS TO NOT BE RELATED TO THE BLUE NINJAS UNLESS HIS DEATH WAS CONNECTED TO THEM*** Let's face it, they originally had some Arashikage ties of some kind but they're really separate thematically and in practice now, so it's almost two separate threads. I don't know what kind of resolution I would want to see for Destro and the Baroness. A happy ending hopefully but maybe he has sins to atone for despite being a somewhat good whitehat. She certainly does. Zartan requires the most at this point. I don't consider him a ninja but if he retired to become a bladesmith for the Arashikage at the end, that would be dope. If Buzzer or a different peer joined him, that would be cool too. He's been such a back-and-forth character with his constant betrayals, murders, and attempts at amends that I would like to see him finally make good, or finally just commit seppuku (noting that he's not a samurai). Cobra Commander should either die, go to supermax, or get away. Honestly I kind of feel like the Cobra organization has been so obviously and intentionally portrayed as being broke and structurally failing throughout this part of the story that if Cobra just went bankrupt and stopped paying their troops, I could see Cobra Commander and Mindbender just kind of driving off together and continuing their abusive friendship. Or the twins kill them for betraying the Crimson Guard, that might be satisfying. Mindbender could almost be Operation Paperclipped into the Joes. Definitely don't want Dawn or Sean to kill either of them and Tommy is too far beyond vengeance also. There are so many Joes that I don't know how you end them all except to say that they can just keep fighting the good fight. There really aren't that many who need an ending. The Joes I would touch base with for a final status check would be Stalker, Scarlett, Roadblock, I guess Duke + wife, Hawk, but actually a lot of them like Jaye and Flint haven't really been around a lot for personality development in a while. Snake-Eyes would need a resolution which would come in the form of something with Dawn and Sean honoring him in a meaningful way. Not knowing how long the series will go, in a way Snake Hunt exists as a gigantic flawed ending for ARAH until such a time that it's farther into the rearview mirror. But I would hate to see the series just keep going forever under different writers and never resolve, or end abruptly without resolution. Ha ha the worst thing ever would be if it ended definitively under Hama and then the ending was undone by another writer who didn't understand the source material like a decade later to revive it. Can you image that we're all sitting around in retirement homes in our 80s reading it going "this doesn't make sense, in issue 35 this other thing happened." Quote:

To those complaining about the art in this issue...Anyone remember the crappy art at the end of the Marvel run?
