I hope 289 or 290 is all about Zartan and his siblings.

I don't particularly care who has the license provided the product is a good one but I'm all for Marvel (or even DC) having a go at it. At this point that only thing I really want to see is ARAH continue to issue 300 and beyond. It doesn't have to be Hama, just the Hamaverse.
I would then be happy to see another company do what you're suggesting with the flavor of ARAH but new events. Really someone could do a quality "Ultimates" version of ARAH and try to keep the feel and characters the same and let it develop similarly.

I liked the first issue of this arc, but it feels like it's gone on an issue too long (with one more to come). As others have mentioned, the characters are pretty vanilla, as is the art (so dull!). Hopefully the next issue wraps this storyline up sufficiently. It won't surprise me at all if Al Kawbra just turns out to be CC himself (yawn).

It would be cool to see these develop into designed characters, but for now they haven't been. Except Multo and Sherlock, I could see her being a figure with the current design, and Multo has been seen in some combat gear which was sort-of unique. When the VAMP appeared I was like "oh, this is GiJoe still." I didn't realize Lady Jaye and Roadblock were in it right away, they sort of feel tagged on. For a long time I've advocated for having more obscure characters as part of squads. This should be a goal of the title. Three well-known characters and two undeveloped one is a pretty good formula, but at least one underdeveloped character should be included in each mission. We're sort of seeing the inverse of that situation, where it's a whole squad of unknown faces, some of them without notable character designs, who are not given enough story time for any personality moments. I try to stay positive so much, but the Cobra Air Force symbol all over vehicles was killing me in the context it was used. On the one hand, it was mildly exciting to see it on the plane, and then on some maintenance vehicles. Then it was on an armored car. This was all supposedly a big mystery and there was supposed to be some subterfuge involved. Clearly it's just a Cobra symbol with wings. I mean, I love that little logo, but Sherlock says that it's a local shipping logo and I was thinking "do you not know what Cobra is?" Then the local language was translated to Cobra and everyone on the team was in shock. Then the money was traced back to Springfield, and... what's the surprise here? How was that not the premise they were already running on? The guy has "Cobra" in his own name. I really came into this story arc expecting a sincere attempt at the mystery genre. The first issue of it I reread three times to try and find all the little mystery clues. Hopefully something actually ties back to the earlier issues of it later on, and there are clues right under our noses the whole time, but it doesn't feel like that. Twice in this issue they walked into a bomb trap and their detective yelled "RUN!" right before the explosives went off. That was just confusing.

Anymore Larry writes CC to be too much of a buffoon to be Al Kawbra. My thought was I wouldn't be surprised to see it was Firefly.

Are we sure Al Kawbra is a man? We got to see some of an obscured face and it looked like a dude but maybe that's part of a misdirect. I'd really be kicking myself later if this is an actual mystery story and I didn't figure it out because I was dismissing it due to my nitpicking.

My take on this is the opposite. I would like to see the title end at #310 and Hama put some effort in to a full definitive ending. That would make ARAH the only version of the characters to receive a real ending.

Lol.

In this issue that's true but Caseload and Sherlock could pull off a figure right away, and the character named Bottom Line is no more generic than Cover Girl. That's workable as a figure, sometimes the figures go too far. I don't remember anything about Bottom Line or Black Hat as characters yet but maybe they have a moment coming up. Multo is most memorable to me for being the guy the defacto team member for Trucial Abysmia who was hired because a previous mission there was a gigantic failure. Then he didn't show up for a few years and finally saw action in the first issue of this mystery arc. In Trucial Abysmia which was admirable.

I’m late to the game here, but I also have to echo the “meh” reviews. I’m interested in Sherlock and some of the new Joe’s, but I felt like this issue was just walking in circles. I don’t think writers have to follow every literary rule to be successful, but when we had our second “it’s a bomb—-run!!!” moment, I groaned to myself.
I was really onboard with this arc, and I’m sort of surprised that this one sort of lackluster issue is bringing down the earlier ones for me. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the wrap up puts it back on positive footing for me! |
