New member here. Been reading the boards for a few years but only just signed up.
Haven't read a lot of the recent run, but I'll definitely buy this. Story looks fun, the art looks fantasic and it's using a lot of my favorite characters. Snow Joes and Cobras? Cover Girl? Low Light? Count me in. Interesting to note that Low-Light and Cover Girl seem to look a lot like they did in the Sunbow show, minus Cover Girl's blonde hair. I like the blonde look for Cover Girl though, so no complaints here. Edit: Actually, Frostbite's hat looks a bit like the guy from A Flock of Seagulls' hair. Still like the looks of this issue, though. Last edited by SnowCat; 02-05-2021 at 01:41 AM.. |

Nice preview! I'm not familiar with Dan Shoening but his art has a Bronze Age feel to it which is my favorite comic era and art style. G.I. Joe just looks better when drawn this way. Beautiful colors, too. Dear Tom Waltz: Bring this art team back for a long run, please!

Glad to see Blizzard. Most of the other Arctic JOEs get very little media time.

I loved everything about this issue. One of the most enjoyable that I've read in recent memory. I'm not sure when it took place but it would have fit right into the Whigham run perfectly. Dan Schoening is PERFECT for ARAH. Tom/Larry: More of these stories and more of Dan, please!

Pretty decent issue, all things considered. Very classic story and art. I agree it had a very “Sunbow” feel to it. Even the vehicles firing paid homage to the red vs blue lasers from the ‘toon!

Best Hama issue since his last special missions, well over a year ago...

This is first issue that I've read more than once in I don't know how long. It is practically perfect. I really hope Tom Waltz can find a way to bring Dan Schoening back for more and encourage Larry to write more stories like this. From what I've seen of #281, the next arc doesn't sound as exciting in terms of story or art, but I'll remain optimistic!

I agree, this is the best issue in a long time, and it was obvious it was going to be as soon as the synopsis came out. Traditional G.I.Joe action, the kind we get maybe once every couple of years nowadays. This is what the comic should be exclusively by this point.
I'm a bit undecided on the art. It does looks good, and has a more than obvious cartoon vibe to it. That's why I'm not sure if it would be a great fit for the Hamaverse in the long run. Imagine if IDWs next Joe comic would be a cartoonverse comic with Schoening on art, though? It would outsell the last five IDW reboots combined. Weird seeing Finland so well-represented on the letters page. G.I.Joe: mission to Finland would be the most surreal Joe experience yet. BTW, would definitely recommend the book The Unknown Soldier (Tuntematon Sotilas) to people. A group of larger than life grunts getting shot at in a tough and gritty world. It's like G.I.Joe set in WWII. Waltz has to be lying. If his family are proud Finns, they can't be Finns.

It just dawned on me that another thing that made this issue stand out (at least for me), was that the characters and vehicles LOOKED like the figures and toys I had as a kid. It was pretty much spot on—down to they even used the weapons the figures came with.
Plus—this issue is what makes good Joe stories: Joes vs. COBRA. Seems so simple, but we rarely get this type of action anymore. |
